Reflections on Reformed Theology and Biblical Inerrancy

(edited)

We discussed several topics during the second half of the semester. However, this reflection paper will be focusing on the first and last topic we have discussed: Reformed Theology and Inerrancy of the Word of God.

What is Reformed Theology? This question was presented to us as we continued the class of Systematic Theology 1. I remember answering it in one word, TULIP, and most of our answers were connected to John Calvin. In response, our professor said something that opened a door for deeper learning and reflection. He said, “Reformed Theology is not only about Calvin and TULIP alone. Tulip is just a tip of an iceberg.” I found that reformed faith is a broad and complex topic. It has a long rich history, and even reformed thinkers have different views on different topics aside from the FIVE Solas.

As we dug into Calvinism, we discussed its principles: cosmological sovereignty of the Triune God, sovereignty of God, and spheres of God, as well as its perspective. This led us to consider the implications of Reformed Theology in various areas of life. Politically, it calls us to recognize God’s supreme authority over rulers and governments. In education, it emphasizes the need for Christian institutions, confirming that education is never neutral at all. Why? Because education carries underlying worldviews. Socially, it upholds the value of community, thus reminding us of the calling to be the salt of the earth and light of the world. Jesus emphasizes our role to reflect and influence for the glory of God. We have come to a point that Calvinism is a life system.

The last topic we discussed is the Inerrancy of the Word of God. We used the book Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy, which immediately revealed that there are multiple perspectives on this doctrine. What is surprising is that these critiques are within the evangelical community, not from outside. The authors find first the place of inerrancy in the theological discussion, because they acknowledge that a misplaced doctrine would result “in a diminishment of Christian truth.” Biblical inerrancy is identified as a subsidiary doctrine under the broader category of special revelation. In relation to this, theological branches such as Bibliology and Soteriology must be properly grounded in a correct understanding of inerrancy.

Notwithstanding their divergent opinions, the writers concur that knowing Jesus is more than simply understanding facts; Christian truth is "existential reality and not just mere affirmation of the facts." We have this relationship with God because we know Him. We become a new creation, renewed with the thought of Christ via the power of the Holy Spirit, when we truly know Him. Since our beliefs are based on experiencing the living God rather than only learning about him, they require revision. We are able to encounter the very reality of the God we believe in because of this interaction.

In reflecting on these two topics, I was reminded how deeply connected doctrine and life truly are. These are not just abstract theological concepts taught in class or church. They shape our perspective, our worship, and our daily walk with the Lord. Reformed theology provides a vision of God’s sovereignty over all of life, while the inerrancy of the Word of God justifies our confidence in God’s revealed truth. Together, they remind us that Christian faith is not just a system of belief, but a living relationship with the Triune God – that transforms our mind, directs our actions, and anchors us in the unchanging truth of His Word.

For many these days, they think that these lessons are merely academic. No, they're not. These concepts are deeply intertwined with one's daily life and spiritual experience.
