In the book "Counseling: How to Counsel Biblically Chapter 6: The Work of the Holy Spirit and Biblical Counseling by John MacArthur" I realized that the Holy Spirit is the one who truly changes a person's mind because His work is always connected to scripture. Yes, we may have counselors, but they are only instruments of God. God is the one who truly transforms our hearts and minds.
The Holy Spirit's task is to find out our flaws, guide us toward repentance, and explain why our deeds are immoral and offensive to our God. The Holy Spirit provides us the resources and bravery to live morally, obey God, fullfil His laws, and combat off sins.
I also observed that a counselor has to lean on the Holy Spirit. From a biblical standpoint, I came to discover that God alone has the power or strenght of solving the problems we face, not the counselor.
For me, this is very helpful when dealing with people who are going through depression. As advisor, I don't have anything against psychologist, but I believe that advice grounded in the Holy Spirit is more effective. This is because the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, helps us better understand the meaning and work of God as written in the Bible, and brings real change to the condition of our hearts.
