My Iron-deficient Batteries and I

When I read this prompt Digital-lifestyle writing prompt I actually laughed out loud and immediately thought of @kingsleyy because if anyone has a saga to tell about power banks, it’s him. Kingsley, I’m waiting for your entry!

But we’re not here to talk about him. Let’s talk about me and my two phones both suffering from chronic iron deficiency.

I use an Android, a Pourvoir 3+, and an iPhone 7. These two have completely different assignments in my life, such that their paths never cross. My Android, in theory, should be the powerhouse. It has a 6000mAh battery, but in reality? It behaves like it’s holding a personal grudge against every percentage between 49 and 6. The moment it hits 50%, it doesn’t even try to negotiate, it just dives straight, eyes closed refusing to listen to logic, to 5% like it’s running late for an appointment.

I’ve changed the battery twice. The first one which was the original battery swelled up like it had an allergic reaction to life. No warning, no explanation,I actually had and still have no idea why that happened. Anyway, I had to replace it immediately. The substitute was also a disaster. Somehow, the engineer managed to squeeze in the wrong-sized battery, and it was rattling inside my phone. Every time I walked or even tried to lift the phone, boom, OFF. We had to reopen the phone and yet again, change the battery.

At first, the new battery seemed promising. Then, out of nowhere, it started the same disappearing act, 70% to 0% in the blink of an eye. They told me, “We’ll boost it, and it’ll get better.” And technically, it did get better, lol, instead of jumping off at 70%, it graciously waits until 20% before taking a dramatic jump into the red zone. A small win, I guess.

When I had a power bank, I absolutely hated plugging my Android into it. That thing would drain a fully charged 20,000mAh power bank in one go. And because my iPhone practically lives on a power bank, I had to pick my battles. The iPhone always won.

Now, let’s talk about my iPhone. Any iPhone user knows for a fact that an iPhone without a power bank is like a fish out of water. In fact, my mum once joked that Apple should just stop putting batteries in their phones altogether since power banks have practically become its default energy source. And honestly, she’s not wrong.

When I got my iPhone 7, the battery health was at a solid 100%. Now, five years later, it’s sitting at 78%. Is that good? Bad? I don’t even know. But I do know that I’ve learned how to preserve it. I don’t charge it overnight, I don't charge it on low power mode, I avoid letting it drain to 0%, and I’ve even cut back on using it while charging just to preserve the battery health.

My Android, though, I’ve given up on that one. It’s epileptic, and at this point, I just let it do whatever it wants.

Luckily, there’s always electricity where I live, so for now, I’m not feeling the battery decline too much. But the second I travel? Whew. That’s when my real struggles will begin, but by then, I hope to emulate @kingsleyy and own at least three power 30,000mAh power banks. 😁😂
