How were you able to take the samples home, though? I'd expect nothing leaves the laboratory in most schools.

Well, for one, my house was really close to the school. Factors like temperature, the amount of impurities to be avoided, and many others decide if a sample can leave the lab or not.
For me, it was at the early stage of my research. I just needed to dry the samples, and lucky for me, I had a microwave at home, so rather than stay up late using the lab's microwave, I decided to do it in the comfort of my home.
It was a whole long process, sieving to drying, but yeah, I was lucky that the beginning processes were those I could conveniently do at home.
Same microwave you use to warm up food at home? I wonder if that's safe.
