If you had told me that a team from Pennsylvania and a team from Indiana would be facing each other in the Little League Softball World Series before this past weekend, I probably would have laughed at you. The historic odds were not in favor of that happening. The fact that North Carolina and South Carolina basically have their own region in the bracket is even more proof it was an unlikely match up.
Yet that is exactly what happened on Sunday this past weekend as the final game of the tournament was played.
Let's back up a little bit.
On Saturday we had the semifinal games between Mid-Atlantic (Pennsylvania), and Southwest (Oklahoma I think). The team from Pennsylvania won that game 4 to 0 to punch their ticket to the championship game. Meanwhile, on the other side of the bracket, Central (Indiana) was facing off against North Carolina to make their way to the big game with a 2 to 0 win.
I think it should be noted that Central actually worked their way through the losers bracket to make it to the championship game. You might remember from my posts last week that they lost their first game to North Carolina in Game 5 that moved them down into the relegated part of the bracket.
Then they fought their way back with a win over Europe-Africa, Latin American, and Asia-Pacific to face off against North Carolina again. That's quite commendable.
I know it doesn't take away the sting quite as much as losing to Pennsylvania 1 to 0 in the final game, but they still have a lot to be proud of and they should hold their heads up high.
It was a really good game. @mrsbozz and I sat and watched it yesterday afternoon. It was actually supposed to start at 3 PM EST, but there was a rain delay for about an hour as some inclement weather moved through the North Carolina area.
There was actually a bit of a heart breaking moment where Indiana looked like they had a chance to score after a slap hitter got to third base on a great at bat, but it turned out she had a foot outside the batters box when she hit the ball, so she was immediately called out.
It was a little thing that ended up costing them pretty big time. Hats off to the officials for getting the call right even if it may have not went the way some people wanted it to.
Like I said, it was a really good game. I remember watching my nieces at the 12 to 13 year old and level and to say these young ladies have a ton of talent would be an understatement. They are all so amazing, and it was really a pleasure to follow them through this journey.
Now the Little League Baseball World Series starts...
