Either last night or early this morning the Ohio Lasers Scarlet team started their migration to Indianapolis, Indiana for the tournament they are playing in this weekend. This tournament is a bit different from the previous ones in that it is taking place over five or so days instead of the traditional three or four that we have seen in the past.
It's not uncommon for organizations to have destination tournaments like this that span the course of a week. They often fill them with camps and clinics for the players who are looking for a little extra help pitching, fielding, or hitting. They also seems to hold the game schedule to just one or two games per day so that they players have time to hit the town or visit some of those clinics.
I'm sure the ladies could probably think of about a million other places they would rather spend the week than Indianapolis, but you do what you have to for the team right?
I know they are going to Panama City for a tournament in a couple of weeks, but don't they have softball tournaments in Hawaii? I can personally testify that Colorado was amazing last summer!
Luckily, it's a pretty short drive from Columbus over to Indianapolis, so like I said, I wouldn't be surprised if most of the players opted to head out this morning versus paying for a hotel room for last night. I could be wrong though.
Action starts at 11:30 AM for them this morning with a game against Mojo Hallock 18U, then they have a 3:00 game against Midwest Speed 18U Gold. I have to admit, it is really nice to see them playing some new teams versus the same handful they have been facing off against in the local Ohio tournaments lately.
Tomorrow they have just a single game against Wheatland Spikes Premier 18U before two 4th of July games against Diamond Dynamics Select 18U and Cincy Doom Premier respectively. You might recognize that last team as they have played against them several times already this summer.
I made the joke the other day that they are just like an STD that you can't get rid of. They just seem to stick around and keep coming back. Hopefully this weekend we can finally beat them into submission.
I just reached out to my niece to tell her good luck today, but with all the work she has put in, the idea of luck seems a bit trite to me. Her dad always told both of his daughters to play hard and have fun, so I didn't want to recycle that phrase either. I decided to go with "make some memories". I think that is a good headspace to enter the game. I think I am going to try and stick with that moving forward. These are times she will never get back, so making memories is the best thing she can do for herself.
What do you think?
Let's go Ladies!!! Fingers crossed they do great at the tournament. I love softball, baseball too...I have a lot of good memories sitting around the diamond field taking in great games.
They won their first game today, so things are starting off pretty good! I've spent a lot more time at the softball field than I would have imagined 15 years ago!
I miss the days of taking in good softball & baseball games. Minor league games are fun too. Majors too crowded. I'll just watch those at home. 😅
