Game, Set, Match

I'm pretty excited tonight I get to watch my niece play volleyball. It isn't that I haven't seen her play before, but tonight the high school team that she plays for is playing against the high school team where @mrsbozz and I work. In addition to that, she has been playing a ton with a travel team in the off season and I have heard that it has vastly improved her game.

@mrsbozz has already seen her play once this season, but I was doing some side work at a clients house and I wasn't able to attend that game. It's going to be kind of weird sitting on the "wrong side" of the bleachers tonight, but I don't really care. I am just looking forward to cheering on my niece.

It's actually a bit hard to find information on volleyball these days. Pretty much every morning when I am on the treadmill walking I am either watching a recap of an NCAA volleyball game that was on the night before, or I am watching one of the many tennis matches that always seem to be taking place in the world.

Like I said though, information in general is hard to come by. If you go to the usual sports outlets, you are lucky to find anything about university volleyball on their page. Even on Yahoo sports I expanded the "other sports" area and volleyball is nowhere to be found.

I find that a little odd considering they now have a professional volleyball league that players can play in after their university career is over.

I have a feeling most other sports sites are probably going to be pretty similar.

In fact, the only place I could really find some decent information was on the NCAA site directly. Unlike most other sports that have their darlings down in the south or on the coasts, volleyball seems to be a decidedly midwest sort of thing. Six of the top 20 teams are all in the Big Ten conference. I think that speaks a lot to how big of a deal volleyball is in the middle of America.

Right now Nebraska is sitting at the top of the rankings with a 4-0 record. Texas is in a close second with a 2-0 record. Then we have Louisville in third also with a 2-0 record. There has already been a bit of a shakeup in the rankings with so few games having been played. Penn State was solidly in the number 2 spot until they suffered a crushing loss against Arizona State I think it was.

I will no doubt be getting some more photos to share with you tonight and I hope to continue to give you an overview of the NCAA volleyball landscape as the season progresses. Between football, playoff baseball, early NCAA basketball, and volleyball this is one of my favorite times of year.
