It was a bit sad watching the streams of my nieces softball games this past week knowing it would be some of the last times I get to watch her play. It's almost like the end of an era as her older sister hung up her cleats earlier this year to focus on being a mom and finish her degree. I won't be shocked if she finds herself back on the field one day as a coach. I think she would do really well at that.
Meanwhile, down in the panhandle of Florida, the Lady Lasers Scarlet were playing their last games in Panama City. I thinking mentioned before that something like 80% of the team including the head coach are moving on from the team after this year. They will either be playing at the university level or moving on to different phases of their lives. It's exciting and sad all at the same time.
I'm pretty sure I already covered how they did in the earlier part of the week last week, so I am going to spare you going over that again. If I didn't, just ask me and I will get you all caught up. Wednesday night they started bracket play and dropped their first game 9 to 5. Since it was a double elimination bracket, that meant they still had a chance, but it was going to be a tough road.
They started Thursday morning with a big win 5 to 0 over a Gold National team. Then they followed that up with another 5 run victory over Excel Elite 5 to 4. Unfortunately, that's where their tournament run ended. Their next match up was against a Reaper team that they led 2 to 0 for most of the game thanks in part to a home run that was hit by our niece. Unfortunately, things fell apart at the end of the game and they ended up losing 3 to 2.
I was chatting with my niece after the fact and she said that they still finished in the top 6 in their division, which isn't too bad, but I could tell she was a bit disappointed. The good news is, this isn't the end of her softball career as she is going to be playing at the university level in just a few short weeks.
We area already starting to plan a trip down to Virginia to watch her play one of her fall games. I am just hoping we can sort out all the details. There is a possibility she could play one more summer if some of her old friends wanted to get an 18U team together, but I have a feeling by then most of them may have moved on.
We will see.
It's going to be weird not having a bunch of different games to bounce between. In fact, next summer we might actually get to spend some time with our in laws away from the softball fields!
