HIVE Needs More Curators! .:. Hump Day Easy Write

Let's go down to the basics of this blockchain... I know that HIVE became a lot more than just a blogging platform, but still, that's the core of this chain and many people know only this "level" of HIVE... So, let's talk about it, and why it is still important to grow and incentivize "blogging"...

After dozens of hard forks on HIVE, we have reached a solid level of security, spam-free platform, but here and there, some plagiarism posts are going through... But, we have built many mechanisms to fight against it and to prevent spreading that on our platform... That was a very important task as we have seen many (Web 1.0, not blockchain-based) blogging platforms disappear in the past because of that... Now, when we have "protected" ourselves from bad "influences" it is time to take the second step...

HIVE Needs More Curators.jpg
Created in Canva.com

But, before doing that, I would like to mention one thing more... The "biggest problem" (or we thought that it's biggest) here on HIVE, from the moment of creation, was onboarding people... How the HIVE blockchain works itself is way too complicated for "ordinary" people to understand, but somehow, the experienced users were forcing that people understand it before use it... Many newbies quit even before turning the first page, just because of that...

Later, through time, we learned that it was wrong to do it like that... Easier ways of account creation are developed, newbies had a chance to make a first step (create a post) without too much hassle... There was progress made! More and more people came to the platform and it was harder and harder to "stick out"...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

I remember very well my first ever live interview with @nathanmars and we were talking about HIVE onboarding, but also about another very, very important issue... It was (and it is) user retention! People come to HIVE, create a couple of posts, see all these hundreds-dollar valued posts, and then they see pennies on their posts... Yes, I know, it doesn't happen overnight, and you can't fly before learning how to do it... But still, after a couple of months, people struggle even if they create fantastic posts...

Is there a solution to that problem? Of course, there is, and some people are already working on it... At this moment, around 5000 posts have been created every day, and it's hard to get noticed in that jungle of posts... Unfortunately, most of them are probably "low effort posts", but there are many great ones, that deserve to get those upvotes and deserve to be appreciated!

Why? Those authors have created unique and valued content that they have published on the HIVE blockchain! That content is the VALUE of HIVE! That content helps Peakd, Hive.blog, and every other frontend of HIVE to get better rankings in search engines... That should help in getting more exposure of HIVE and crypto in general, that should help in that mass adoption that we like to mention many times... I digress...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

Solution?

CURATORS

Those fantastic people that take part of their time to go through posts on HIVE, pick the best ones, upvote them, post a comment, show appreciation to authors... Those who are better organized are supported by big whales or curation trails that CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE... I will name just a couple of them and I will probably miss mentioning a lot of others, but we all know for curator accounts (group of people working for them) like @curie, @ocdb, @diyhub, @cccf, @archon-mining, @thisisawesome, @ourpick, and many others...

Most of them create curation posts, mentioning authors, linking to their posts, call others to check them, and appreciate! That has such a HUGE effect on people that have come to our platform as they feel appreciated and rewarded for their hard work... There is no better way to retain people here than that! That "creates" a feeling of being part of the community and viewing this place as their own home...

Liotes Divider Blue.png

9 months ago, under the @Liotes umbrella, along with @achim03, we have started a new curation account named @Ourpick... The idea was simple... To search for quality posts among different tribes on HIVE and promote them... Promoting authors of the posts (usually undervalued posts), but also promoting different tribes! Win-Win! Currently, HIVE tribes are the "face of HIVE", as many people come to them, without knowing that they are part of a big HIVE blockchain... How great is that?!

We are still a small curation project, but, in only 9 months, the growth is noticeable and we don't do anything crazy, or hard... We do only 3 steps that anyone else can do...

  1. Find a good post on HIVE, read it, and create a meaningful comment
  2. Upvote the post and share it with other readers
  3. Create a special post where we mention authors that we picked for that day and share the post with our followers...

If you don't have time to do these things, you still can support authors by following the curation trails of these curators! In that way, you will help the whole ecosystem and help in members retention on Hive!

Thank you for your valuable time,

~ph~

Great post! Navigating through the sea of low effort content is tiresome. Hive needs more curators and high effort writers.

Can't agree more with you... I would say that those two will come in pairs... When high-quality authors see that their work is recognized, they will continue with doing it... Also, others will notice that too and create better content... And for curators? No better view that "navigating through" great content :)

Yes indeed hive needs more curator. It really hurts when I see my post failed with 0.03 upvotes 😛 but I'm still hopeful for something good and not losing patience.

Just be patient and build your account... Engage with different people on their posts, and they will come...

I curate much more on vyb because the downvoting is too much of a negative feeling to spend long on hive main page.

Completely agree with you about downvoting... I understand the point, but I think that there is another, a better solution to cope with plagiarism and spam...
Curating in any of the tribes can help a lot on many levels! Thanks for doing it!

Sadly there is a handful of people here that are going to implode this platform completely with their behaviour. I actually think some have a mental illness like sociopath etc but just happen to have a lot of tokens. It's sad to see something with potential just be thrown down the drain, it's already caused a lot of people to leave and the retention is low. Maybe if one downvote was the same for everyone irrespective of their wealth it might work, so for example if 1000 people considered something to be plagiarism then it could carry some weight rather than one rich person who just doesn't like someone. Lets hope to see vyb evolve :)

Thanks for your post on this topic. It's something I've been thinking about for some time now. You bring up a great point that many of the previous kinks in the system have been worked out: account creation and on-boarding, spam, and the ole - how do I become noticed - in the deluge of posts pouring into Hive.

With so much focus paid to attract new users, it's easy to overlook the vital importance of retaining users. In business, one would say, 'what's the use of acquiring new customers if you can't ultimately keep them?'

Curation services can go a long way in both identifying good content and encouraging the efforts of would-be frequent authors. I think the curators on Hive are doing a great job with the former. But I think it's up to users to nail the latter...

Thanks, again, for your post on this topic. I think I'm going to go write a post on this, myself! lol

Cheers!

Exactly! They are usually going along, but someone has to do that "groundwork" and manually pick the content, write a comment, and suggest it to others for reading...

I think I'm going to go write a post on this, myself!

Please, do it! It's important to talk about this topic! The final goal is always the same... Give more power back to the people!

Great take on a way to help grow the Hive community. I may not be able to comment on every amazing post I run across, but I do up-vote and re-blog them. Never thought of creating a post to highlight the post and it's author.

1.4E-7 BEE

Thanks! Of course, we can't comment on every post on HIVE, but from my personal experience, even a short comment that shows appreciation to the author is often more valued than 50 upvotes... ;)

Thanks for taking the time to check my post!

Whenever I see a post in one of my communities from a new person (low reputation) I upvote and leave some encouragement. Without encouragement, they won't stay. And some of those newbies quickly became valued posters--I see this often in the NeedleworkMonday community.People share their first post tentatively, but if the veterans make comments, they post again and keep getting better. We would have missed out on some great content if those people had not stayed with us. !BBH

Without encouragement, they won't stay.

Exactly! That's why I said that 1 comment and nice word is more precious than 100 upvotes... I mean, people do appreciate crypto, but that "human touch" means a lot...

Thanks for supporting newbies!

Onboarding only makes sense with retention and I believe there is no better way to increase retention by allowing new users to earn money with their posts. I totally agree that curation plays a big part in that but it's time consuming and not always very rewarding in the short term. In the long term, that's how you build up relations on the blockchain!

1.4E-7 BEE

Completely agree with you! Building up relations through comments is another level of HIVE! Maybe the next topic for a blog post? :)
