After more than 20 years, I found the binoculars [EN/PT]

This Sunday, I went to visit my mother and, despite having felt sick during the previous two days, it turned out to be a really nice day. When I was already about to leave, I came across a pair of binoculars hanging on a fence in the backyard and I couldn't believe it, because I had spent many years of my childhood looking for them.

During one of my childhood adventures, I ended up losing those binoculars and spent a long time searching for them. I couldn't believe it when I saw them hanging there. I even thought they could belong to someone else, but I became certain the moment I saw a broken part that immediately revealed they were the exact same binoculars I used to play with as a child. To be honest, I still can't believe it. My mother said they were buried near an old vegetable garden that belonged to my grandmother and, honestly, I have no idea how they are still so well preserved.

Esse domingo, fui visitar minha mãe e, apesar de ter passado mal nos dois dias anteriores, foi um dia bem legal. Quando já estava indo embora, me deparei com um binóculo pendurado em uma cerca do quintal e não pude acreditar, porque passei muitos anos da minha infância procurando por ele.

Em uma das minhas aventuras de criança eu acabei perdendo esse binóculo e fiquei muito tempo procurando. Não acreditei quando vi ele pendurado ali. Até imaginei que poderia ser outro, mas tive certeza no momento em que vi uma parte quebrada que denunciou imediatamente que era o mesmo binóculo com o qual eu brincava quando criança. Para falar a verdade, ainda estou sem acreditar. Minha mãe disse que ele estava enterrado perto de uma antiga horta da minha avó e, sinceramente, nem sei como ele ainda está tão conservado.

I received these binoculars from an uncle, I think when I was maybe around 10 or 11 years old. They are not toy binoculars, but they are not one of those exceptional military ones either. Still, back then they felt pretty close to something high quality, at least to me. Today I searched a little about them and was surprised when I saw that their market value ranges between 100 and 200 reais (something around 20 to 40 dollars). I also discovered that they were a relatively popular item at the time and are now considered vintage.

But anyway, I brought the binoculars home and completely disassembled them so I could properly clean everything. Well, taking things apart is always the easy part of anything. The problem is putting everything back together afterward. I admit I thought it would not be that complex, after all, I have watched so many restoration videos on YouTube that everything looks so easy! Obviously, I imagined I could run into difficulties during the reassembly, but I needed to do it in order to clean the lenses and remove the excess dirt accumulated between the joints of the parts.

Esse binóculo eu ganhei de um tio, acho que quando tinha talvez uns 10 ou 11 anos. Não é um binóculo de brinquedo, mas também não é daqueles militares excepcionais. Porém, era algo bem próximo de qualidade na época, pelo menos para mim. Hoje pesquisei um pouco sobre ele e fiquei impressionado quando vi que seu valor de mercado varia entre 100 e 200 reais (algo em torno de 20 até 40 dólares). Também descobri que era um artigo relativamente popular na época e hoje já é considerado vintage.

Mas enfim, trouxe o binóculo aqui para casa e desmontei ele totalmente para conseguir limpar tudo. Bem, desmontar é sempre a parte fácil de qualquer coisa. O problema é montar depois. Confesso que pensei que não seria algo tão complexo, afinal tenho assistido tantos vídeos de restauração no YouTube que tudo parece tão fácil! Obviamente eu imaginava que poderia ter dificuldades na montagem, mas precisava fazer isso para limpar as lentes e retirar o excesso de terra acumulado entre as juntas das peças.

As soon as I got home on Sunday, I disassembled everything, washed it, and left it drying for two days. I figured that if it dried completely, I wouldn’t have any problems with foggy or stained lenses.

Assim que cheguei em casa no domingo eu fiz a desmontagem, lavei tudo e deixei secando por dois dias. Imaginei que, se ele secasse completamente, não teria problemas com lente embaçada ou manchada.

This morning was the big challenge, because I needed to put everything back together again. I thought it could be difficult, after all, reassembling things is usually complicated, but to my surprise it wasn’t. I think those YouTube restoration videos are actually giving me some skills haha!

Well, the most complex part, and the one that took me a while to understand, was the area where the zoom adjustment is located. There is a central rod that you need to completely remove in order to screw everything back together. Without doing that, it seems like the central screw does not lock properly. So there’s a little tip for you in case you own binoculars like these and decide to take them apart for cleaning 😅

Hoje pela manhã foi o grande desafio, porque eu precisava montar tudo novamente . Poderia ser difícil, afinal sempre é complicado remontar as coisas, mas para minha surpresa não foi, acho que realmente os videos do you tube de restauração está me dando habilidades haha!

Bem, a parte mais complexa e que demorei um pouco para entender foi a região onde fica o ajuste de zoom. Existe uma haste central que você precisa tirar totalmente para conseguir parafusar. Sem fazer isso, parece que o parafuso central não fixa direito. Então fica a dica aí caso você tenha um binóculo desses e resolva desmontar para limpar 😅

The sad part was breaking one of the supports that hold the binocular strap. That would probably reduce its value if I ever wanted to sell it, but since it has sentimental value to me, that was never the intention anyway. I want to take it with me on my outdoor adventures, and I’m planning to replace the strap with one made from paracord. I think it will end up being more durable and comfortable as well, since the original strap is made from a kind of plastic ribbon that can actually hurt a little. I know that because it already happened to me when I was a kid.

So after making that adjustment, I think it will look cooler, be more functional, and also more comfortable. I’m just still not sure if I’ll attach it to the remaining clip, because if one of them broke that easily, the other one might end up suffering the same fate.

A parte triste foi ter quebrado uma das hastes que prendem a alça do binóculo. Isso provavelmente faria ele perder valor caso eu quisesse vender, mas como ele possui um valor sentimental, essa nunca foi a intenção. Quero levar ele para minhas aventuras outdoor e pretendo colocar uma alça feita com paracord. Acho que vai ficar mais resistente e confortável também, já que a alça original é feita com uma espécie de fitilho plástico que pode até machucar. Eu sei disso porque isso já aconteceu comigo quando era criança.

Então, depois de fazer esse ajuste, acredito que ele vai ficar mais legal, funcional e confortável. Só ainda não tenho certeza se vou prender na presilha remanescente, porque se uma quebrou com facilidade, a outra também pode acabar acontecendo a mesma coisa.

After putting everything back together without major problems, I made some coffee and stayed there for a while just looking at those binoculars, remembering my childhood and even that uncle of mine whom I haven’t seen in many years. During that moment this morning, I could perfectly remember the feeling of receiving such a cool "toy", something that brought even more life to the moments when I was pretending to be a soldier, maybe there in my grandmother’s vegetable garden, using the spaces between the planting beds as my imaginary trenches. Damn, it feels so good to have these binoculars back here again!

Depois de montar tudo sem grandes problemas, fiz um café e fiquei ali olhando para aquele binóculo por um tempo, lembrando da minha infância e até mesmo desse meu tio que não vejo há muitos anos. Durante esse tempo que fiquei ali hoje pela manhã, consegui me lembrar perfeitamente da sensação de ter ganhado um "brinquedo" tão legal, algo que trouxe ainda mais vida para os momentos em que eu estava guerreando como um soldado, talvez lá na horta da minha avó, usando os espaços entre os canteiros de verduras como minha trincheira imaginária. Porra, legal poder ter esse binóculo aqui de volta!
