How I use the new PeakD KE feature to prevent rewarding scammers

Earlier this week @asgarth posted a blog about the recent updates of @peakd (link)
It's nice to see that my favourite front-end is in development. And it's extra nice that the team listens to input from users.
This update contains two of the requests I had done in the Peakd Discord Server. The first is a clean-up for tags in Snaps and the second one is an easy way of showing KE of a user that made a post.

What is KE?

KE stands for Krampus Coefficient and it was introduced by @azircon
It is a number that represents how much staked Hive a Hiver has compared to what they have earned.
If you have staked all your rewards, your KE is 1. The more you have 'extracted', the higher your KE. A KE of 2 means that you have 'extracted' twice the value of your staked Hive.
If you have a KE below 1, you have more staked Hive than you have earned in rewards. You probably have invested to buy more Hive then.
You can state that the KE score is an indicator of who brings 'money' into the platform and who withdraws it. But it is not this black and white (read on!).

KE is controversial

Ever since it was introduced, KE has been a bit controversial. Krampus a horned, demon-like creature from folklore in Austria and Germany. This creature punishes misbehaving children by abducting them. The choice for this name doesn't hide the thought of why this was introduced I think.
And then there is judgement of people with a high KE. Some people live under miserable conditions and need the rewards to be able to eat or pay their bills. And who are we to judge what someone does with the rewards they’ve earned themselves?
I think KE is a useful tool and could be used, but with care.

Use KE responsibly

KE is one of the metrics we have to see how an account interacts on this blockchain. And I think this is how it should be used.
When I'm curating it's one of the things I look at. Next to the reputation, date joined, number of posts and comments and followers.
For me, the KE number doesn't need to be lower than 1. For me it's no problem when people extract some of their rewards or even all of it. But I do check out accounts that have a very high KE.
For instance this Frank Real guy. He posted a snap saying: "Today is the perfect time to reflect on my financial future—it’s a really healthy thing to do, that’s for sure!".
I already was sceptical, but then I saw this KE of 752.91!

KE.png

I checked the accounts wallet and saw that only had 0.056 Staked Hive, which could explain a high KE, but then I checked the transactions and noticed this account has siphoned off a lot of rewards in the past and is probably a scammer.

Accounts with a KE higher than 10 always get some extra attention before I decide whether I would upvote them or not. It can be checking their wallets or their post history. And there are still cases when I do decide to upvote. But when I see someone that, in my opinion, has no need to extract the rewards, they won't get my upvote. I rather spend it to Hivers that do stake a significant part of their rewards or those who need it more.
People can do what they want with their rewards, but I'm not supporting people that use Hive as an ordinary cash cow 🐮

How to configure it?

If you're using PeakD you could already see the KE when you go to someone's profile page. But when you are curating it's kind of a hassle to check every profile page of posts you like to upvote. That's why I requested @peakd to add it to the popup when you hover over someone's account.
And they implemented this for me ❤️

If you want it to work, you need to enable it in the PeakD settings first to show up:

So if you are interested in seeing the KE from Hivers, configure the setting above and hover over a icon to see it!
And use it responsibly too!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on my blog. Feel free to share your perspective in the comments.

It has been a while that I don't see KE being discussed around! We like to put the guilty only in the DHF (which I agree is a big player on the inflation problem also), but we forget that we get Hive from posting and curating, so KE is important also, however it doesn't play a role by itself. I just entered the user you mentioned, he got 42 hive for now hehehe . That's not even 5 USD. Of course that if a guy got only 42 hive of rewards and spent all of them is bad... but there are bigger problems, There is a good post from @azircon that he shows plots about total rewards and ke, that is a great visualization! People that already sold thousands of hive.

Thanks for the info about KE - I hadn't noticed that it could be checked on PeakD profiles and I wouldn't have been sure what it meant.
