It's common with female folks. I had a lady years back imply something like "I wasn't at her level" even though I was actually helping her sort out a few bills. It's popular with females. Thankfully I left that life over 4 years ago.
People misuse the word friends a lot

the sad part is they don't reject the financial help, they pretend they don't know what is going on. A guy helps you to sort some bills and also gives you attention beyond the ordinary and you still think he wants just friendship, of course they know yet will act like they don't...
