Sometimes in life, it's the little things that make us reflect, the ordinary things that we always overlook. Like dirty dishes. Yeah, I know it sounds funny, but lately I’ve been thinking about how even the pile of unwashed plates and cups in the sink can be something to actually be thankful for.
There was a time in my life when I was struggling to even afford proper meals. I would just eat anything I could find or sometimes go to bed without food. Back then, I would look at pictures online of people’s food and wonder when I’d be able to cook like that in a kitchen of my own. So now when I see dirty dishes, I try not to complain like I used to. It means I had something to eat, something to cook, and even a kitchen of my own to mess up.
You know, dirty dishes means someone ate. It means food was shared. Maybe you had friends over, or it was just you enjoying a quiet meal, but either way, it was nourishment. It’s so easy to forget these things. We just grumble and say "Ah, who will wash these plates now?” But when you think deeper, it's really a blessing in disguise.
Sometimes when I’m washing dishes, I just pause and smile. The same plates I’m scrubbing once held jollof rice and plantain, maybe even soup with fufu, or even just tea and bread. All of them carry a memory. I think that’s something to be grateful for.
I also think about the people who might not have anyone to cook for or who don’t have access to running water or soap to wash their dishes. Some don’t even have the strength to get up from bed, let alone prepare food and dirty dishes. Life is not always easy, but when we start being thankful for the small ‘inconveniences,’ we see how rich we really are.
I know it might sound strange to some people, but that’s the truth. Dirty dishes are like silent witnesses to our daily life. They tell a story. The plate with burnt edges, Maybe you tried a new recipe. The cup with lipstick stain, Maybe you had a visitor. The fork in the sink, Maybe you were just hungry and rushed a quick meal before heading out. All of them come together and show that life is happening, you're living.
Gratitude doesn't always have to be deep or poetic. Sometimes it’s just a whisper while you rinse off oil from a frying pan. It’s just you saying, “Thank you for this food, and even the mess that came with it.” That alone changes your perspective. It makes you complain less and smile more.
So yeah, next time you see a sink full of dishes, before you sigh or start ranting, just pause. Look at them differently. See them as signs that you’re lucky, that you’re fed, and that you’re doing okay. It doesn’t mean you won’t get tired or overwhelmed sometimes, but at least you’ll carry that feeling of gratitude with you.
Because in this life, even dirty dishes can be a reason to say thank you.
