Communication strategies in covenant university

Educational institutions rely heavily on structured and professional communication strategy and models to maintain order and discipline within the institution. All of these structures help to play a critical role in the maintenance of order.

Communication is key to the process of maintaining order and the effectiveness of disciplinary measures are very much dependent on the implementation of the rules and not just the rules.
This academic report explores the communication strategy between the disciplinary committee of Covenant University and the students. The report gathered information through different channels and these channels brought about the results that will be presented through the report. Data was gathered through:
• Interviews: Students were interviewed to gain information on their several takes on the communication strategy used by the MSS.
• Observation of disciplinary procedures: We observed the process that is taken by the MSS to communicate to the students mostly those that flouted the rules.
• Informal discussions: Conversations were had with MSS to know how they takeactions and communicate to the students from time to time.
• Survey questionnaires: Questionnaires were sent to the students to have full information on the students’ point of view of the communication strategy between students and the MSS. This helped to have non-biased information.

The disciplinary institution that is present in Covenant university is the Monitoring-Security and Surveillance. They are responsible for the implementation of rules and regulations within the school community. They also respond to calls that borders around security breach within the university community. They have minimal but broad communication strategy which helps to ease communication between the community (CU students) and the committee (MSS).

The MSS deals with the disciplinary aspects of the school’s dealings and the following are the channels used to communicate to the students:

• Students handbooks: The handbook contains the rules and regulation the students are to adhere to. It contains the code of conduct expected of every student. It was made as a guide for every student to acclimatize themselves with the environment and know the dos and don’ts thereof.

• Announcements: Weekly announcements are made to remind students of the rules and also to update the students on any new rules made by the school disciplinary committee. These announcements are made during chapel services and others during gatherings as well.
