7 de Agosto - Bogotá

I didn't make a mistake with the title, I know today is August 3, but my title refers to a neighborhood in Bogotá called 7 de Agosto, not the date, hehe.

We visited this neighborhood for the first time a little over a week ago. My husband insisted that I bring him a leather bag from our home in Caracas which has one of the stitching on the shoulder strap broken. Since Colombia is known for doing good leatherwork, he wanted to have it repaired. And we were recommended to visit this neighborhood, 7 de Agosto, because it’s an area where leather workshops and stores specializing in leather goods are concentrated.

It’s a very busy area known not only for its leather shops but also for its market, the 7 de Agosto Market Square.

I really wanted to take photos, but to be honest, I didn’t feel comfortable taking out my phone in the streets in such a crowded area. But I was lucky enough that we stopped for a meal at a Mexican restaurant with a wonderful view of the square, so here are a few of the photos I took.

The market building has a pink side covered in colorful murals. After walking around the market, I can say I was lucky because our view was of this side, which I think is the most attractive part of the market’s entire exterior.

This is the view of the street right across from where we went to eat Mexican food. In another post, I'll tell you about the food. It was delicious and deserve its own post.

I was struck by the lone pigeon that seemed to be keeping watch over something from the top of the building across from us.

So I decided to take another photo of it. I wonder what it was watching.

The day we were there was July 24. Out on the street, I noticed an apartment high up in a building where the Venezuelan flag was flying. Perhaps it was flying because that day is a holiday in my country. It marks the birth of Simón Bolívar, “El Libertador.” Also, that day marked exactly one month since the twin earthquakes that struck Caracas and La Guaira. I don’t know why, but I liked seeing our flag there.

Maybe the next time I’m in the area, I’ll take some photos inside the market square. We’ll definitely be back, not just because we have to look for the bag, but also because we’d like to eat at that Mexican restaurant again.
