It is very uplifting to make the crowd happy and share a great time with them. And the truth is... To start is easier & more cheap than you might think!

Ein DJ zu sein ist nicht nur ein Geschenk an dich selbst, sondern auch an deine Zuhörer! Es ist sehr erhebend, das Publikum glücklich zu machen und eine tolle Zeit mit ihm zu verbringen. Und die Wahrheit ist... Der Einstieg ist einfacher und billiger, als Du vielleicht denkst!

My "musical doings" and education startet 30 years ago, in the year 1994 with learning to play the piano. With DJing I began at the age of 15 in the year 2000 with good old vinyl. My first record player had a price of roundabout 100 USD or so (a Reloop device). I upgraded pretty fast to Numark TT-500 (original 450 USD per device) and rocked over-regional stages in Germany as main artist and/or as companion for pre- and after-show-parties for other bands. I mainly played & scratched Hip-Hop tunes, but also EDM.

After I had a break 2009, I got back to DJing after a four (I think) years - then on digital decks. Digital I started with Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 (a original 200 USD controller). In recent time I worked with a Numark NS7 2 (original 1,400 USD), but sticked to a Denon DJ MC6000MK 2 (original 500 to 1000 USD, depends where). Beside my "hands-on" of a variety of other turntables and DJ controllers. Why I give you this description? I don't know all, I am not James Hype or the God of DJing, but I have enough solid experience that you can believe my words.

Mein „musikalisches Tun“ und meine Ausbildung begann vor 30 Jahren, im Jahr 1994 mit dem Erlernen des Klavierspiels. Mit dem Auflegen begann ich im Alter von 15 Jahren im Jahr 2000 mit dem guten alten Vinyl. Mein erster Plattenspieler hatte einen Preis von rund 100 USD oder so (ein Reloop-Gerät). Ich rüstete ziemlich schnell auf Numark TT-500 (ursprünglich 450 USD pro Gerät) auf und rockte überregionale Bühnen in Deutschland als Hauptkünstler bzw. als Begleiter für Pre- und After-Show-Partys für andere Bands. Ich habe hauptsächlich Hip-Hop gespielt & gescratcht, aber auch EDM.

Nachdem ich 2009 eine Pause gemacht habe, bin ich nach (ich glaube) vier Jahren wieder zum Auflegen gekommen - damals noch an digitalen Decks. Digital habe ich mit dem Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 angefangen (ein Original-Controller für 200 USD). In der letzten Zeit habe ich mit einem Numark NS7 2 (Original 1.400 USD) gearbeitet, bin aber bei einem Denon DJ MC6000MK 2 (Original 500 bis 1000 USD, je nachdem wo) geblieben. Außerdem habe ich eine Reihe von anderen Plattenspielern und DJ-Controllern ausprobiert. Warum ich Dir diese Beschreibung gebe? Ich weiß nicht alles, ich bin nicht James Hype oder der Gott des DJing, aber ich habe genug solide Erfahrung, dass Du meinen Worten glauben kannst.

Let us go thru the basic aspects of becoming a DJ - at least on the tech side. It is not much you need to know or need to have to start right away. Maybe today? You can do start today and I prove it to you!

P.S.: About the skills we will talk in an upcoming post. But don't let this slow you down. The skill of DJing can be an art, but is very often very basic and there are plenty free ressouces to learn them in a short amount of time. The first basics you can learn pretty fast. The art comes in when you combine these skills and grow them, stack and level them up. In every case it is no rocket science. Don't be scared!

P.S.: Über die Fähigkeiten werden wir in einem der nächsten Beiträge sprechen. Aber lass dich davon nicht aufhalten. Die Kunst des DJing kann eine Kunst sein, ist aber oft sehr einfach und es gibt viele kostenlose Möglichkeiten, sie in kurzer Zeit zu lernen. Die ersten Grundlagen kannst du ziemlich schnell lernen. Die Kunst besteht darin, diese Fertigkeiten zu kombinieren und sie auszubauen, zu erweitern und zu verbessern. In jedem Fall ist es keine Raketenwissenschaft. Hab keine Angst!

What you need:

No or not much money!

You need a few physical basic components, which you might already have. If you don't have them, don't worry! Once again: you don't need (much) money to get started. If you need any component, maybe you could lend it from anybody. I am sure when you have fire in your thoughts a good friends or your dad will help you out and maybe lend you this or that component.

Kein oder nicht viel Geld!

Du brauchst ein paar physische Grundkomponenten, die du vielleicht schon hast. Wenn du sie nicht hast, mach dir keine Sorgen! Noch einmal: du brauchst nicht (viel) Geld, um anzufangen. Wenn du irgendwelche Komponenten brauchst, kannst du sie dir vielleicht von jemandem leihen. Ich bin sicher, wenn du Feuer im Kopf hast, wird dir ein guter Freund oder dein Vater helfen und dir vielleicht dieses oder jenes Teil leihen.

Vinyl or digital?

DJing is mostly done digital nowadays. Yes, there are still some purists, but if you start today, the best and most versatile way you can go is digital. This is the way where you don't have to spend a ton of money within your start too. Digital means you will likely need a computer/laptop/iPad. Or even your phone might be enough to start DJing! There are some DJ controller where have a whole operating system included - so you don't need an extra computer. But for testing out your new hobby, I don't would recommend buying such a expensive system. Let's assume you are thoughtful and like to test out DJing and don't like to waste a ton of money if you don't stick to it.

But if you like to spend money:

Check your needs, do your research and buy the best quality you can afford. A 700 USD DJ controller doesn't mean a 400 model couldn't be better for your needs. Plus, be aware: a high-prize controller likes to live in a (flight-)case when you are thinking about to leave your bedroom. A dust cover for your home - every towel can serve as substitution for a dedicated plastic dust cover - can do a good job, too. But no bagpack can do the job of a firm (flight-)case. I personally never fly with my equipment but have to transport them in cars. And yes, flight-cases can be heavy and expensive. But when you own gear in worth of X you could think that a solid protection for 200 bucks may be worth it.

Sure, expensive controllers can offer more features and often have better sound components. And more features can be more fun to work with and enhance your session. But I never would recommend to buy a top-notch model for a beginner. If money doesn't count, okay, do what you want - but do your research before; there are significant differences! And my 1700 USD Numark NS7 had more bugs and I returned him and use a 700 USD model (MC6000 MK2) from Denon DJ nowadays. He is smaller - good for a mobile DJ. Do I miss all this hyper functions? Sometimes. But what I really need is a reliable work horse with solid quality. Not a buggy piece of tech which leaves me alone during a session. However: do your research. There is enough info out there about every price range.

Hint: Nothing sounds better when more LEDs are built-in.

Vinyl oder digital?

DJing wird heutzutage hauptsächlich digital betrieben. Ja, es gibt immer noch einige Puristen, aber wenn du heute anfängst, ist der beste und vielseitigste Weg, den du gehen kannst, digital. Das ist auch der Weg, bei dem man nicht gleich zu Beginn viel Geld ausgeben muss. Digital bedeutet, dass Sie wahrscheinlich einen Computer/Laptop/iPad benötigen. Aber auch dein Handy kann ausreichen, um mit dem DJing zu beginnen! Es gibt einige DJ-Controller, die ein komplettes Betriebssystem enthalten - du brauchst also keinen zusätzlichen Computer. Aber um dein neues Hobby auszuprobieren, würde ich nicht empfehlen, ein so teures System zu kaufen. Nehmen wir an, du bist bedacht und möchtest das DJing ausprobieren und möchtest nicht viel Geld verschwenden, wenn du nicht dabei bleibst.

Aber wenn du gerne Geld ausgibst:

Überprüfe deine Bedürfnisse, stelle Nachforschungen an und kaufe die beste Qualität, die du dir leisten kannst. Ein DJ-Controller, der 700 USD kostet, bedeutet nicht, dass ein 400er-Modell für deine Bedürfnisse nicht besser sein könnte. Außerdem solltest du dir bewusst sein, dass ein hochpreisiger Controller gerne in einem (Flight-)Case lebt, wenn du daran denkst, dein Schlafzimmer zu verlassen. Eine Staubschutzhülle für die Wohnung - jedes Handtuch kann als Ersatz für eine spezielle Plastik-Staubschutzhülle dienen - kann ebenfalls gute Dienste leisten. Aber kein Rucksack kann die Aufgabe eines festen (Flug-)Koffers übernehmen. Ich persönlich fliege nie mit meiner Ausrüstung, aber ich muss sie im Auto transportieren. Und ja, Flight-Cases können schwer und teuer sein. Aber wenn man eine Ausrüstung im Wert von X besitzt, könnte man meinen, dass ein solider Schutz für 200 Dollar es wert sein könnte.

Sicher, teure Controller können mehr Funktionen bieten und haben oft bessere Soundkomponenten. Und mehr Funktionen können mehr Spaß bei der Arbeit machen und deine Session verbessern. Aber ich würde nie empfehlen, ein Spitzenmodell für einen Anfänger zu kaufen. Wenn Geld keine Rolle spielt, okay, dann mach was du willst - aber recherchiere vorher; es gibt erhebliche Unterschiede! Und mein 1700 USD teurer Numark NS7 hatte mehr Fehler und ich habe ihn zurückgegeben und benutze jetzt ein 700 USD teures Modell (MC6000 MK2) von Denon DJ. Er ist kleiner - gut für einen mobilen DJ. Vermisse ich all diese Hyperfunktionen? Manchmal schon. Aber was ich wirklich brauche, ist ein zuverlässiges Arbeitspferd mit solider Qualität. Kein fehlerhaftes Stück Technik, das mich während einer Session im Stich lässt. Wie auch immer: Recherchiere. Es gibt genug Infos über jede Preisklasse.

Tipp: Nichts klingt besser, wenn mehr LEDs eingebaut sind.

Headphones

You need to have headphones to listen to your audio before your listeners do so - for example you like to search a track and want to listen into the start. Or you want to check cue-/memory-points or the end of the current playing to track to have a clue how you like to finish the current song or mix the next one in.

Yes, in some situation you can DJ without headphones - but to be honest: you will need a pair to do what you have to do as a DJ. Only girls bith bikinis can DJ hands free and without headphones... The headphones don't have to be a pro model in studio quality, wireless or with fancy foldable ears. Every pair of headphone will do the job for your start.

But if you do plan to spend money...

If you really think about to buy them, buy quality. Beside headphones from the known DJ brands (where I don't have much experience with), there are the ultimate Beyerdynamic DT 770. These will cost over 100 bucks, but are the reference in neutral sounding, you will find them in every music studio (because of their neutral sound) and you are able to repair single components in 10 or 20 years. And they are loud enough. My recommmendation: If you buy headphones, buy Beyerdynamic DT 770 (closed/capsulated model - best for DJing and not spreading the sound into the world). Check out the Ohm number - likely you will prefer the 80 Ohm variant - but this depends how you want to use your headphones mainly.

And if you don't stick to DJing, you always have "the best" headphones to listen to your music. podcasts or your guided meditations. I can promise you (and everyone where I recommended these headphones agreed after buying/using): you will love them - even if you don't DJ. Their sound is world-class studio reference for a unbeatable price.

I have to say a word about wireless headphones: most wireless headphones are not meant for DJs because of the to big latency. If you think you like/need wireless headphones, buy models which are meant for DJs and use the newest Bluetooth standard with according low latency.

Kopfhörer

Du brauchst einen Kopfhörer, um deine Audiodaten zu hören, bevor deine Zuhörer dies tun - zum Beispiel, wenn du einen Titel suchst und in den Anfang hineinhören willst. Oder du willst Cue-/Memory-Punkte oder das Ende des aktuell gespielten Tracks überprüfen, um einen Anhaltspunkt zu haben, wie du den aktuellen Song beenden oder den nächsten hineinmischen möchtest.

Ja, in manchen Situationen kann man auch ohne Kopfhörer auflegen - aber mal ehrlich: Für das, was man als DJ tun muss, braucht man ein Paar. Nur Frauen in Bikinis können freihändig und ohne Kopfhörer auflegen... Der Kopfhörer muss kein Profimodell in Studioqualität, kabellos oder mit schicken, faltbaren Ohren sein. Jeder Kopfhörer reicht für den Anfang aus.

Aber wenn du vorhast, Geld auszugeben...

Wenn du wirklich darüber nachdenkst, sie zu kaufen, dann kaufe Qualität. Neben den Kopfhörern der bekannten DJ-Marken (mit denen ich nicht viel Erfahrung habe), gibt es den ultimativen Beyerdynamic DT 770. Diese kosten zwar über 100 Dollar, sind aber die Referenz in Sachen neutraler Klang, man findet sie in jedem Musikstudio (wegen ihres neutralen Klangs) und man kann einzelne Komponenten in 10 oder 20 Jahren reparieren. Und sie sind laut genug. Meine Empfehlung: Wenn du Kopfhörer kaufst, kaufe Beyerdynamic DT 770 (geschlossenes/gekapseltes Modell - am besten zum DJing und um den Klang nicht in die Welt hinauszutragen). Prüfe die Ohm-Zahl - wahrscheinlich wirst du die 80-Ohm-Variante bevorzugen - aber das hängt davon ab, wie du deinen Kopfhörer hauptsächlich benutzen willst.

Und wenn du nicht als DJ auflegst, hast du immer „die besten“ Kopfhörer, um deine Musik, Podcasts oder deine geführten Meditationen zu hören. Ich kann dir versprechen (und jeder, dem ich diese Kopfhörer empfohlen habe, hat nach dem Kauf/Benutzung zugestimmt): Du wirst sie lieben - auch wenn du nicht auflegst. Ihr Klang ist Weltklasse-Studioreferenz zu einem unschlagbaren Preis.

Ein Wort noch zu den kabellosen Kopfhörern: Die meisten kabellosen Kopfhörer sind wegen der zu großen Latenz nicht für DJs geeignet. Wenn du glaubst, dass du kabellose Kopfhörer magst/brauchst, kaufe Modelle, die für DJs gedacht sind und den neuesten Bluetooth-Standard mit entsprechend niedriger Latenz verwenden.

Speakers

Any kind of speakers will do the job for your start. For sure it is more fun when you have the blast of a dedicated 1000 watt PA in your room, but if you still don't have dedicates speakers, your laptop sound-system, old computer monitors or your whatever will do the job, too. Your focus has to be: how can I get started?

Small hint: PA systems (PA means "Public Address" - it includes your mixer/amp and the speakers) needs to be driven at a appropriate volume level. Means: if you have a 1000 or 3000 watt amp/speaker, but have to use them on the minimum volume level in your house, the cone can't work like he should - a poor sound experience is the result. Buy speakers that fits your needs! And watts don't mean everything. Look at really expensive BOSE high-end speakers. They can be loud as you like and have a superior sound quality, but can have just 5 or 16 watt per speaker. But I tell you too: since I have a 700 watt PA system in my room my studio monitors are off when I DJ at home.

But if you do plan to spend money...

Check your needs! When you play most often at your own 4 walls or at small locations (where you maybe don't bring your speakers at all), it might be better to buy active studio monitors or small active PA speakers. Don't buy Hi-Fi. Buy (active) studio monitors or active PA. Hi-Fi colors your sound to make it best sounding for regular listeners. But this colored sound is not the truth. If you do music, buy studio gear/monitors for your home usage. Yes, studio monitors aren't meant to have a hard rowdie life, but if you handle them with care, you can take them to every place within your first time. I had a pair of really the most cheap studio monitors you can get - but everywhere I brought them (without a dedicated sub!) I got the feedback "Great sound!"

To be honest: now I own an active 700 watt system from JBL and yes... they sound better and I will never again brought my studio monitors to a location... But for a affordable start?

In my opinion the best is: have your studio monitors at home and your PA ready to load into your car. Do you need a big PA for every venue? Maybe not. Many locations have their own PA. Especially clubs. And if you really should need to bring a PA, you could hire one too. This makes much more sense than having a PA and use them twice a year. But let's be honest: a 15 inch PA from a quality brand, maybe plus a 18 inch sub rocks! But this all depends where you live, on the size of your location and which genre you play.

There are some rules how many watt you need for which location size indoor or outdoor. And some DJs will say "better buy 12 inch tops and a 18 inch sub, because of the 12 inch has clearer mids. I have 15 inch tops, because a high quality subwoofer from JBL (in my case/setup makes the most sense) is not cheap. And until this point I have enough punch in my sound. Believe me. Especially if you have EQs on your PA mixer. (A separate mixer might not be needed in many/most cases - don't mind about for now. I [and many mobile DJs] have one [because I am musician since many years], but as a starting DJ, don't mind about.)

Lautsprecher

Jede Art von Lautsprechern ist für den Anfang geeignet. Sicherlich macht es mehr Spaß, wenn du eine 1000-Watt-PA in deinem Raum hast. Aber wenn du noch keine eigenen Lautsprecher hast, reichen auch deine Laptop-Lautsprecher, alte Computerboxen oder was auch immer. Dein Fokus muss sein: Wie kann ich anfangen?

Kleiner Tipp: PA-Systeme (PA bedeutet "Public Address" - dazu gehören Mischpult/Verstärker und die Lautsprecher) müssen mit einem angemessenen Lautstärkepegel betrieben werden. Das bedeutet: wenn du einen 1000- oder 3000-Watt-Verstärker/Lautsprecher hast, diese aber auf der kleinsten Lautstärke in deinem Haus betreiben musst, kann die Membran nicht so arbeiten, wie sie sollte - ein schlechtes Klangerlebnis ist die Folge. Kauf dir Lautsprecher, die zu deinen Bedürfnissen passen! Und Watt ist nicht alles. Sieh dir die wirklich teuren BOSE High-End-Lautsprecher an. Sie können so laut sein, wie Sie wollen, und eine hervorragende Klangqualität haben, aber sie haben nur 5 oder 16 Watt pro Lautsprecher. Aber ich sage dir auch: Seit ich eine 700-Watt-PA-Anlage in meinem Haus habe, sind meine Studiomonitore aus, wenn ich zu Hause auflege.

Aber wenn du vorhast, Geld auszugeben...

Überprüfe deine Bedürfnisse! Wenn du oft in deinen eigenen 4 Wänden oder in kleinen Locations auflegst (wo du vielleicht gar keine Lautsprecher mitbringst), ist es vielleicht besser, aktive Studiomonitore oder kleine aktive PA-Lautsprecher zu kaufen. Kauf keinen Hi-Fi. Kauf dir (aktive) Studiomonitore oder aktive PA. Hi-Fi färbt den Klang, damit er für normale Hörer am besten klingt. Aber dieser gefärbte Klang ist nicht die Wahrheit. Wenn du Musik machst, kaufe Studioausrüstung/Monitore für deinen Heimgebrauch. Ja, Studiomonitore sind nicht dafür gedacht, ein hartes Leben zu führen, aber wenn man sie mit Sorgfalt behandelt, kann man sie innerhalb der ersten Zeit an jeden Ort mitnehmen. Ich hatte ein Paar der wirklich billigsten Studiomonitore, die man bekommen kann - aber überall, wo ich sie mitnahm (ohne dedizierten Sub!), bekam ich die Rückmeldung „Toller Sound!“

Um ehrlich zu sein: jetzt besitze ich ein aktives 700-Watt-System von JBL und ja... sie klingen besser und ich werde nie wieder meine Studiomonitore in eine Location mitnehmen... Aber für einen günstigen Einstieg?

Meiner Meinung nach ist es am besten, die Studiomonitore zu Hause zu haben und die PA im Auto einzuladen. Braucht man eine große PA für jeden Veranstaltungsort? Vielleicht nicht. Viele Locations haben ihre eigene PA. Vor allem in Clubs. Und wenn du wirklich eine PA mitbringen musst, kannst du auch eine mieten. Das macht viel mehr Sinn, als eine PA zu haben und sie zweimal im Jahr zu benutzen. Aber seien wir ehrlich: Eine 15-Zoll-PA von einer Qualitätsmarke, vielleicht noch mit einem 18-Zoll-Sub, rockt! Aber das hängt alles davon ab, wo du wohnst, wie groß deine Location ist und welches Genre du spielst.

Es gibt einige Regeln, wie viel Watt man für welche Location braucht, ob drinnen oder draußen. Und manche DJs werden sagen: "Kauft lieber 12-Zoll-Tops und einen 18-Zoll-Sub, weil der 12-Zoll-Topteil klarere Mitten hat. Ich habe 15-Zoll-Topteile, weil ein hochwertiger Subwoofer von JBL (in meinem Fall/Setup am sinnvollsten) nicht billig ist. Und bis zu diesem Punkt habe ich genug Punch in meinem Sound. Glaubt mir. Vor allem, wenn man EQs an seinem PA-Mixer hat (ein separates Mischpult wird in vielen/den meisten Fällen nicht benötigt - das ist erst einmal egal. Ich [und viele mobile DJs] haben einen [weil ich seit vielen Jahren Musiker bin], aber als DJ-Einsteiger ist es auch egal.)

DJ software

There are plenty offers and all are good to get you started. You could spend money, but you can use Mixxx for your first days, too. Mixxx is Open-Source-Software, free to download and will run on low-specs Windows or Linux computers (or a Mac), too. On my home setup I used Mixxx on a more than 5 or 6 year old Intel NUC with just 4 GB memory - worked. With Mixxx you can do everything (and more) what you need at the beginning.

When you realized that you want to stick to DJing, you can buy or rent other DJ software. But before you are not 100% sure you will stick, don't spend the money or use a long-term subscription model.

But if you do plan to spend money...

Really do your research! In best case you stick to your software a long time. Because you will build your artistic component on it. DJing consists very often on two things: handcraft and art. Every DJ can do his handcraft on every deck or controller - no problem. But when you build up your artistic part, it is likely that you do that in combination of your software. Do your research! What do other DJs use? Why they use it? Is this or that software limited to specific hardware? When you aim for clubs: what does your venues use?

Let me be honest (as always): If you like to spend a little money, you could subscribe (or buy) VirtualDJ. VirtualDJ is pretty universal usable for all kind of controllers and offers you really a ton of fun features, combined with a good posibillity to step away from VirtualDJ later.

Be aware: some controllers are tight to a specific software and are delivered with a light- or pro-edition of this software. Be aware of that! No need to buy the full version of (for example) the Serato DJ software, when one month later you buy a controller where Serato or Rekordbox (or similar) is included.

What you should know: compare and test first. It is likely that you don't like to switch your software later. Because likely a lot of information/work you included in your music files can't be transfered into your new software. I love Virtual DJ and would never change. Why? Not only because I own the lifetime version with unlimited updates and they regularly pump out features in updates where other software/hardware companies ask for additional money. Or there are companies which say: "Oh your controller is X years old? Then you can't use our new update. Please buy our new hardware first. Your hardware still works? Not our problem!". And very important because I trigger my whole light show via Virtual DJ programming. I don't know a reason why I would change my software... Virtual DJ is great! You can test it via subscription or within a limited time span per session if you don't like to pay anything.

DJ-Software

Es gibt viele Möglichkeiten und alle sind gut für den Anfang. Du kannst Geld ausgeben, aber du kannst auch die Software Mixxx für die ersten Tage benutzen. Mixxx ist Open-Source-Software, kann kostenlos heruntergeladen werden und läuft auch auf einfachen Windows- oder Linux-Computern (oder einem Mac). Bei mir zu Hause habe ich Mixxx auf einem mehr als 5 oder 6 Jahre alten Intel NUC mit nur 4 GB Speicher verwendet - hat funktioniert. Mit Mixxx kann man alles (und mehr) machen, was man am Anfang braucht.

Wenn man merkt, dass man beim DJing bleiben will, kann man andere DJ-Software kaufen oder mieten. Aber bevor du nicht 100%ig sicher sind, dass du dabei bleiben willst, solltest du kein Geld ausgeben oder ein dauerhaftes Abo-Modell nutzen.

Aber wenn du vorhast, Geld auszugeben...

Recherchiere gründlich! Im besten Fall bleibst du deiner Software eine lange Zeit treu. Denn du wirst deine künstlerische Komponente darauf aufbauen. DJing besteht in den meisten Fällen aus zwei Dingen: Handarbeit und Kunst. Jeder DJ kann sein Handwerk auf jedem Deck oder Controller ausüben - kein Problem. Aber wenn du deine künstlerische Komponente aufbaust, ist es wahrscheinlich, dass du das in Kombination mit deiner Software machst. Erkundige dich! Was benutzen andere DJs? Warum benutzen sie es? Ist diese oder jene Software auf bestimmte Hardware beschränkt? Wenn du dich an Clubs wendest: Was wird in deinen Clubs verwendet?

Lasst mich ehrlich sein (wie immer): Wenn du gerne ein wenig Geld ausgibst, könntest du VirtualDJ abonnieren (oder kaufen), was du jederzeit kündigen kannst. VirtualDJ ist ziemlich universell für alle Arten von Controllern verwendbar und bietet wirklich eine Menge interessanter Funktionen, kombiniert mit einer guten Möglichkeit, später von VirtualDJ wegzukommen.

Achtung: einige Controller sind an eine bestimmte Software gebunden und werden mit einer Light- oder Pro-Edition dieser Software ausgeliefert. Das sollte man beachten! Es ist nicht nötig, die Vollversion von (z.B.) der Serato DJ Software zu kaufen, wenn man einen Monat später einen Controller kauft, in dem Serato oder Rekordbox (oder ähnliches) enthalten ist.

Was man wissen sollte: Zuerst vergleichen und testen. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass du deine Software später nicht wechseln möchtest. Denn wahrscheinlich lassen sich viele Informationen/Arbeiten, die du in deinen Musikdateien gespeichert hast, nicht in deine neue Software übertragen. Ich liebe Virtual DJ und würde nie wechseln. Und warum? Nicht nur, weil ich die Lifetime-Version mit unbegrenzten Updates besitze, sondern auch, weil sie regelmäßig neue Funktionen in Updates einbauen, für die andere Software-/Hardwarefirmen zusätzliches Geld verlangen. Oder andere Firmen, die sagen: "Oh, Ihr Controller ist X Jahre alt? Dann können Sie unser neues Update nicht nutzen. Bitte kaufen Sie erst unsere neue Hardware. Ihre Hardware funktioniert noch? Nicht unser Problem!". Und für mich auch sehr wichtig, warum ich nicht wechseln werde: weil ich meine ganze Lichtshow über die Virtual DJ Programmierung steuere. Ich wüsste keinen Grund, warum ich meine Software ändern sollte... Virtual DJ ist großartig! Du kannst es im Rahmen eines Abonnements oder für eine begrenzte Zeitspanne pro Sitzung testen, wenn du nichts bezahlen möchtest.

DJ controller

You don't need, but it makes sense: a DJ controller to control your software. A DJ controller is a physical interface to control your DJ software and lastly zour music. You can control your software via mouse and keyboard, too. So if you don't have a controller right now, that is no reason to don't get started doing your first mixes, prepare your music library, set cue points, order music crates and so on. But lets be honest: I assume you like to turn platters, push buttons and move faders, turn potentiometer and so on. You can do great mixes without a controller, but I think you like to look like a typical DJ, too.

Does it need to be expensive?

No. The foundation of a DJ is his skill. There are plenty of videos where you can see great DJ sets on no or a 99 buck controller. Easier to understand: you can play on the cheap guitar. The song and the player has to be right. Yeeees, a expensive guitar can sound better, like a expensive DJ controller gives you more ways to interact and has (mostly) better sound components. But what is most important: your will, your musical taste and your skill. A fancy controller can do fancy stuff and can enrich your playing - but when you don't know the basic of craftmanship, a fancy controller don't will help you. When you can't play the guitar, you can't play the guitar - the biggest effect panel don't will help you, but will confuse and distract you.

But if you do plan to spend money...

Like always: check your needs, do your research and buy quality within your budget. The market of DJ controllers is wide and can be confusing. What is the difference between a Pioneer/Alpha Theta DJ XDJ-RX3, a XDJ-XZ, XDJ-RR, DDJ-FLX10, DDJ-FLX6, a DDJ-FLX-GT, DDJ-REV1, REV-5, REV-7 and so on... and why not buy a product from Denon DJ, Rane or Numark? Or does it need to be a professional world-brand? Could a Reloop give you a better bang for your buck? Can be! How about Herkules controller? May be sufficient when you just like to play on a birthday or in front of half drunken people in your party cellar and don't like to mind about if you spill your beer over it. Confused enough? Perfect - I did my job right. What I like & need to say: DO YOUR RESEARCH if you like to spend money.

And if you can't decide tomorrow which fancy controller you like, buy something for 200 bucks and that's it. In this class you should have more than enough fun as a starter and when you really stick to your new hobby (or future job), you have plenty of time to watch hundreds of videos about controller X and Y - after you did your daily active music routine. Doing your work will bring you to your dreams, instead of just dreaming about and spend a ton of money.

As a starter it maybe is the best way: better buy something worthy for 200 bucks and see if you really are going the way to become a DJ or if you just dream about to be the most famous guy/girl in the room, but aren't considered to really go this way (which needs time and practice).

DJ-Controller

Du brauchst keinen, aber es macht Sinn: einen DJ-Controller zur Steuerung deiner Software. Ein DJ-Controller ist eine physische Schnittstelle zur Steuerung deiner DJ-Software und letztlich auch deiner Musik. Du kannst deine Software auch über Maus und Tastatur steuern. Wenn du also noch keinen Controller hast, ist das kein Grund, nicht mit deinen ersten Mixen anzufangen, deine Musikbibliothek vorzubereiten, Cue-Points zu setzen, Plattenkisten zu ordnen und so weiter. Aber seien wir ehrlich: Ich gehe davon aus, dass du gerne Teller drehst, Knöpfe drückst und Fader bewegst, Potentiometer drehst und so weiter. Du kannst auch ohne Controller tolle Mixe machen, aber ich denke, du möchtest auch wie ein typischer DJ aussehen.

Muss das teuer sein?

Nein. Das Fundament eines DJs ist sein Können. Es gibt viele Videos, in denen man tolle DJ-Sets ohne oder mit einem 99-Dollar-Controller sehen kann. Einfacher zu verstehen: Du kannst auch auf einer billigen Gitarre spielen. Das Lied und der Spieler müssen stimmen. Ja, eine teure Gitarre kann besser klingen, so wie ein teurer DJ-Controller mehr Möglichkeiten zur Interaktion bietet und (meist) bessere Soundkomponenten hat. Aber was am wichtigsten ist: dein Wille, dein Musikgeschmack und dein Können. Ein ausgefallener Controller kann ausgefallene Sachen machen und dein Spiel bereichern - aber wenn du die Grundlagen des Handwerks nicht kennst, hilft dir ein ausgefallener Controller nicht weiter. Wenn du nicht Gitarre spielen kannst, kannst du nicht Gitarre spielen - das größte Effektgerät hilft dir nicht, sondern verwirrt und lenkt dich ab.

Aber wenn du vorhast, Geld auszugeben...

Wie immer gilt: prüfe deinen Bedarf, recherchiere und kaufe Qualität im Rahmen deines Budgets. Der Markt für DJ-Controller ist groß und kann verwirrend sein. Was ist der Unterschied zwischen einem Pioneer/Alpha Theta DJ XDJ-RX3, einem XDJ-XZ, XDJ-RR, DDJ-FLX10, DDJ-FLX6, einem DDJ-FLX-GT, DDJ-REV1, REV-5, REV-7 und so weiter... und warum nicht ein Produkt von Denon DJ, Rane oder Numark kaufen? Oder muss es eine professionelle Weltmarke sein? Könnte ein Reloop Ihnen ein besseres Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis bieten? Kann sein! Wie wäre es mit einem Herkules-Controller? Reicht vielleicht aus, wenn man einfach nur auf einem Geburtstag oder vor halb betrunkenen Leuten im Partykeller auflegen will und sich nicht daran stört, wenn man sein Bier darüber verschüttet. Verwirrt genug? Perfekt - ich habe meinen Job richtig gemacht. Was ich sagen möchte & muss: Erkundige dich, falls du Geld ausgeben magst.

Und wenn du dich morgen nicht entscheiden kannst, welcher schicke Controller dir gefällt und du das Gefühl hast, dass du einen Controller unbedingt kaufen musst, dann kaufe etwas für 200 Dollar und das war's. In dieser Klasse solltest du als Einsteiger mehr als genug Spaß haben. Und wenn du wirklich bei deinem neuen Hobby (oder zukünftigen Job) bleibst, hast du genug Zeit, dir hunderte von Videos über Controller X und Y anzusehen - nachdem du deine tägliche aktive Musikroutine erledigt hast. Wenn du deine Arbeit machst, wirst du deine Träume verwirklichen, anstatt nur davon zu träumen und eine Menge Geld auszugeben.

Für den Anfang ist es vielleicht der beste Weg: kaufe lieber etwas Wertvolles für 200 Dollar und schaue, ob du wirklich den Weg gehst, ein DJ zu werden, oder ob du nur davon träumst, der berühmteste Kerl/das berühmteste Mädchen im Raum zu sein, aber nicht in Betracht ziehst, diesen Weg wirklich zu gehen (was Zeit und Übung braucht).

Music to play

This is a complex topic. With some luck you already own some high-quality music you like to play. Because ripping music from YouTube is not only illegal and killing the income and the art of producing music. Ripping music doesn't provide you with music in good sound quality. Maybe you don't care about for your start in your bedroom or for the own party cellar.

But the truth is - and I have to say this: music in good sound quality is not available for free. As long as you don't mind about great sound quality and stealing from artists, do what you mean is okay. But when you play on a big PA or quality speakers, you will regret that you filled your library with poor sounding songs.

Musik zum Abspielen

Das ist ein komplexes Thema. Mit etwas Glück besitzt du bereits hochwertige Musik, die du gerne abspielst. Denn Musik von YouTube zu rippen ist nicht nur illegal und vernichtet das Einkommen und die Kunst der Musikproduktion. Durch das Rippen von Musik erhältst du keine Musik in guter Klangqualität. Vielleicht ist das für den Start im Schlafzimmer oder für den eigenen Partykeller aber auch egal.

Aber die Wahrheit ist - und das muss ich sagen: Musik in guter Klangqualität gibt es nicht umsonst. Solange du dich nicht um gute Klangqualität kümmerst und von Künstlern klaust und es okay findest, mach was Du willst. Aber wenn du später über eine große PA oder Qualitätslautsprecher spielen willst, wirst du es bereuen, dass du deine Bibliothek mit schlecht klingenden Songs gefüllt hast.

A final word...

Do you have to be the most skilled DJ to rock? The answer is: No, you don't have to. Yes, you can spend years and years to finalize your skills and spend thousands of dollars on tech. Being a DJ is something where you can learn new stuff every day. A painter paints a wall. Once he knows how to, it is more or less the same job. But as a DJ you can receive new impressions every day! How to manipulate this new song? How to handle the crowd of this new venue? How about to handle the area of being a mobile or a wedding DJ? How to use this or that new tool? How about to evolve your artistic expression? You can spend time and time and time and...

But the most important thing: do you have to? You don't need to master every new kind of transition for that, not every scratch, not every effect for this. The truth is: playing the right music in the right moment makes the people happy. THIS is what counts! It is nice if you can do every trick on your decks - but your crowd does much more care about to hear the right music for their mood. You DON'T HAVE to be the artist #1 - you just have to play happy music with some basic skills/knowledge about. If you do this, enjoy it and can transport your joy to the crowd, people will show you their "thumbs-up". Promised.

DJing can, but doesn't have to, be rocket science or expensive.

Ein letztes Wort...

Musst du der beste DJ sein, um zu rocken? Die Antwort ist: Nein, das musst du nicht. Ja, du kannst Jahre damit verbringen, deine Fähigkeiten zu perfektionieren und Tausende von Dollar für Technik ausgeben. Als DJ kann man jeden Tag etwas Neues lernen. Ein Maler streicht eine Wand. Wenn er einmal weiß, wie es geht, ist es mehr oder weniger die gleiche Arbeit. Aber als DJ kann man jeden Tag neue Eindrücke gewinnen! Wie manipuliert man diesen neuen Song? Wie geht man mit dem Publikum an diesem neuen Veranstaltungsort um? Wie geht man mit dem Bereich eines mobilen DJs oder eines Hochzeits-DJs um? Wie benutzt man dieses oder jenes neue Werkzeug? Wie entwickelt man seinen künstlerischen Ausdruck weiter? Du kannst Zeit und Zeit und Zeit und Zeit damit verbringen...

Aber das Wichtigste ist: musst du das? Man muss nicht jede neue Art von Übergang beherrschen, nicht jeden Scratch, nicht jeden Effekt. Die Wahrheit ist: die richtige Musik im richtigen Moment zu spielen, macht die Leute glücklich. DAS ist es, was zählt! Es ist schön, wenn du jeden Trick an den Decks kannst - aber deinem Publikum ist es viel wichtiger, die richtige Musik für die jeweilige Stimmung zu hören. Du MUSST nicht der Künstler Nr. 1 sein - du musst nur fröhliche Musik spielen und ein paar grundlegende Fähigkeiten/Wissen haben. Wenn du das tust, Spaß daran hast und deine Freude auf das Publikum übertragen kannst, werden dir die Leute ihren „Daumen hoch“ zeigen. Versprochen.

DJing kann, muss aber nicht, Raketenwissenschaft oder teuer sein.
