The Colorful Libad Boat Festival of Calumpit Bulacan

Today I want to share one of the most awaited traditions here in Calumpit, Bulacan. Every year, many people gather to celebrate the Libad Festival in honor of San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist). It is one of the biggest religious celebrations in our town, and many devotees, visitors, and families join this special event.
The Libad is a river procession where decorated boats travel together while carrying the image of San Juan Bautista. The celebration is a way of giving thanks, offering prayers, and asking for blessings.

Since Calumpit is surrounded by rivers, this tradition has been part of the town for many years. It is always amazing to see so many colorful boats sailing together while people sing, wave flags, and enjoy the celebration.

This year, my husband and our son joined the Libad. My husband is the one wearing the green cap in the pictures, he is raising his hands! While my son became our little photographer for the day. I was happy because he enjoyed taking photos of everything he saw. He was excited to capture the boats, the people, and all the activities happening on the river.

They rented a big boat together with other passengers. Everyone shared the rental fee, so the cost became affordable for each person. I think it is a good idea because more people can experience the festival without spending too much money. The boat was full, but everyone looked happy and excited while waiting for the procession to begin.

Looking at the pictures, I can see how much effort the participants put into decorating their boats. Some boats were filled with colorful flags, while others were carrying groups wearing matching shirts. The atmosphere was full of joy and excitement. Even though the weather was a little cloudy, it did not stop the celebration.

I was not able to join them on the boat, but I enjoyed looking at all the photos my son took. I felt like I was also there because of the moments he captured. Events like this remind me how beautiful our traditions are. It is not only about having fun but also about keeping our culture and faith alive. I hope this festival will continue for many more years so the next generation can also experience this wonderful tradition.

Thank you for reading and I hope I can make you smile with these video compilation made by the team of our Mayor in Calumpit.

Just like the Sinulog Festival in Cebu, which features a fluvial parade where boats sail together carrying the image of Señor Santo Niño, you can see the joy and excitement on the faces of the people attending the Libad Boat Festival.
