Just Another Weekend Walk Around Chinatown, Singapore

Living in Singapore now, weekend for me sometimes very simple only. No big plan, no tourist itinerary, no rushing from one attraction to another. Sometimes I just choose one area, bring my phone, and walk around slowly. This weekend, I ended up in Chinatown again, not because I wanted to visit anything special, but just because I feel like walking.

Since I am from Malaysia, Singapore never really feel completely foreign to me. Many things still feel familiar, especially the food, Chinese culture, the way people talk, and even some of the shops. But Singapore still got its own feeling. Everything seem more compact, more organised, and somehow old and modern can sit together very naturally.

Chinatown is one of those place where I can come many times but still notice something different.

The street was already quite busy when I arrived. Tourist everywhere, local people doing their own thing, families walking around, older uncle and auntie, and groups of young people checking shops. Some people walking fast, some suddenly stop in middle of the road to check phone, and some taking photo without noticing people behind.

But honestly, Chinatown without crowd maybe also feel strange.

One thing I like here is the colour. There is so much red, gold, bright signboard, lanterns, restaurant light and old building colour everywhere. Then behind all these traditional looking shops, you can see modern tall buildings rising in the background. I really like this contrast because it make the place feel like old Singapore and modern Singapore inside same frame.

While walking, I saw one shop selling Chinese decoration and performance items. The first thing that catch my eye was several giant heads hanging outside. The faces got big cheeks, thick eyebrow and very dramatic smile.

In daytime, still okay.

But if somebody put one of those heads inside dark room at night, I think no need ghost already.

Below them got lion dance items also, with red, white and black lion costumes. Seeing them close up is quite interesting because normally we only see lion dance moving fast during performance. Here you can actually notice all the small detail, colours and patterns.

I also passed another shop with Chinese opera style masks. Every mask got different colour and design. Some red, blue, yellow, black and white. I don't really know the meaning behind each one, but visually they are very nice to see.

There were also many souvenir shops selling pouches, keychains, jewellery, decorations and small traditional items. Some shops got almost no empty wall because everything is hanging so close together.

Later, I reached the fruit area and of course, there was durian.

A lot of durian.

As Malaysian, I think there is automatic reaction when seeing durian outside Malaysia. Even if I got no plan to buy, I still check the price first. I cannot explain why. Maybe this one already installed inside Malaysian brain.

The stall also had mangosteen, mango, orange and other fruits. I noticed one sign about vacuum packing durian for flight travel, which probably is very useful. Bringing normal durian inside airplane is probably fastest way to make everyone remember you.

The deeper I walk, the more crowded the street became. At some point, I was just following the people in front. If they move, I move. If they stop, I also stop.

I think because I am staying in Singapore now, I enjoy these walks differently. There is no pressure to see everything in one day. I can come back another weekend anytime.

When I looked through my photos later, none of them were perfect travel photos. Some crowded, some got random people blocking the view, some angle not straight.

But I actually like them that way.

They show Chinatown how I really saw it that day. Busy, colourful, slightly messy, traditional and modern all mixed together.

Nothing special happened that weekend.

I was just walking.

And somehow, that was enough.

At the end, this Chinatown walk was nothing special or planned, but maybe that is why I enjoy it more. Just walking slowly, looking at random shops, people, colours and small things around me make the weekend feel less boring. Living in Singapore means I can always come back again, maybe next weekend, maybe another month, and probably see something different again. Sometimes we don't need a big trip to make a good memory. Just go outside, walk around, and let the place give you the story.
