70 Years Young: A Milestone of Memories and Moments

My grandma is celebrating her 70th birthday. We call her "Mamuh." She’s so kind, generous, and lovable to her "apos" or grandchildren, as well as intelligent and young at heart.

Our celebration was simple but full of love and joy. We decorated the outside of our house and set up a big tent for everyone. In the morning, we hung colorful decorations and balloons to make the place festive. We also added a table skirt to set up the food. It wasn’t extravagant, but it was perfect for the occasion, and everyone had a wonderful time.

In the afternoon, we kicked off the celebration. Everything was ready, and the food was all set to be served. One of the main dishes we had was "Lechon na baboy," which is the most delicious dish to enjoy at any birthday celebration, along with many other local Filipino foods. "Lechon na baboy" is a whole roasted pig, which is a beloved Filipino dish. It’s cooked slowly over a charcoal or wood fire, which makes the skin crispy and the meat incredibly tender. This dish is a highlight at big gatherings like weddings, birthdays, and fiestas.

Aside from the main course, we also set up a dessert station for everyone to enjoy. After the meal, there were delicious desserts available, including cakes, that everyone could indulge in.

Now, it’s time to eat, and I’m so excited! I’m enjoying the crispy skin of the lechon or "panit ng lechon," dipped in Mang Tomas sauce. The sauce has a little kick of spice, and I really like it. Along with the lechon, we also have delicious lumpia, shrimp, and "pansit bihon". It’s a happy tummy moment! To make the celebration even more special, my family and I are all wearing matching blue shirts that say “Happy 70th Birthday Mamuh.” We’re celebrating together, looking great and feeling even better.

There’s also "dirty ice cream," which is delicious especially when served in a cone. In the Philippines "dirty ice cream" is a type of street ice cream that many people love for its special taste. It’s called "dirty" not because it’s unclean, but because it’s usually sold by vendors on the streets, often in carts without refrigeration. This makes it feel more homemade and authentic. The ice cream is made fresh and comes in many colorful flavors, from classic chocolate and vanilla to local ones like ube, mango, and cheese. It’s usually served in a cone, but sometimes in small plastic bags, making it easy to carry around. Its fun colors and creamy taste make it a popular and affordable treat in local markets, and it’s a favorite of many Filipinos.

Our Mamuh was so happy with her birthday celebration. Her friends, neighbors, and family came to join the fun. It was a lively gathering, filled with laughter and good times. Everyone enjoyed the food, the company, and the warm atmosphere, making it a birthday to remember for “Mamuh” and for all of us who celebrated with her.
