Yesterday, my brother gave me money to buy female chickens. I chose a new variety of local chicken instead. I went to Setu traditional market to make the purchase. The market conditions were unpleasant. It smelled bad and was very dirty. I had to cover my nose many times because of the strong, stingy odor.
I went to some chicken sellers, but the dirty location made me uncomfortable. So, I decided to leave the market and look for a small chicken seller outside. I walked to the parking area and left. The experience was not fun at all, the market was smelly, crowded, and unpleasant. I preferred shopping somewhere cleaner.
After five minutes of riding, I found a chicken seller. There were only a few varieties to choose from. I asked the seller, "How much is a female chicken?" He replied, "Seventy thousand IDR." I said, "That’s expensive. Can I have it for sixty thousand?" But the seller refused to lower the price. Eventually, I agreed to buy one chicken for seventy thousand IDR despite the cost.
On my way home, I realized that the local chicken variety is far more expensive. A female local chicken weighs about a kilo and costs around seventy thousand IDR, while factory-bred chicken is only thirty-five thousand IDR per kilo. Despite the price difference, many people in Indonesia still prefer local chickens because they believe the meat is more nutritious and tastier. This belief keeps the demand for local chickens high, which is why the price is almost double compared to factory-bred chickens.
Local variety chickens come in various colors, and I prefer the black ones. In contrast, factory-bred chickens usually have uniform colors, like brown or white, making them look less unique or interesting.
I went home, and the next day I decided to buy some bamboos to repair the roof system of the chicken coop. I bought two sticks of bamboo for fifty thousand IDR. I plan to repair the roof tomorrow. Right now, my local chicken is still stressed and doesn’t want to eat. I placed it in a small coop. Once the chicken gets accustomed to its new habitat, I will let it out to meet my male chicken.
On this occasion, I’m also experimenting with crossbreeding a local female chicken with a factory-bred male. I’m curious to see how the new variant will turn out in terms of size and appearance.
