When the Heat Turns Farming Into a Struggle

Since last month, we have already started experiencing increasingly hot weather. This month, the heat has become even more intense. When the weather is clear, we are often able to witness beautiful sunsets especially when viewed by the beach, where the colors appear even more stunning. However, as beautiful as these sunsets are, the same heat and clear conditions that create them also bring negative effects on farming.

During extreme heat, many farmers begin to face serious problems, especially those whose farms have limited water supply. This is one of the biggest challenges they encounter, because crops can wither or even die when they can no longer withstand the intense heat. Our place may be beautiful, but during periods of extreme heat, farmers are greatly affected.

This time, you really need a lot of patience when it comes to watering the plants doing it every day, sometimes even twice a day. If you don’t put in the effort, your plants will most likely die. In our case, my mother and I water our plants twice daily, but no matter how much care we give them, it’s still unavoidable that some will not survive. It’s painful to see them wither and die, but that’s the reality of farming, you have to accept that not everything you plant will grow or bear fruit.

One of the things I’m grateful for is that near our mini farm, there is a hand pump connected to a deep well. Although many people in our area struggle with water supply, we are less affected because the hand pump provides a strong and steady flow of water. We are also lucky that it was installed close to our farm.

This hand pump is relatively new, but the deep well itself has been there for more than 50 years. I still remember when we were children, we used to fetch water directly from the well before the hand pump was installed. We would use a bucket tied to a rope, lower it into the well, and pull it back up to get water.

Despite the extreme heat that brings many challenges to farming, especially in maintaining crops and water supply, we are still grateful because we have access to a hand pump connected to a deep well near our mini farm. This source of water helps us continue watering our plants every day, even during the hottest days. While many farmers struggle due to lack of water, we are fortunate enough to manage better because of it. Still, farming teaches us that no matter how much effort we give, not everything we plant will survive, especially under extreme weather conditions.
