Happy Friday Hivers!
The construction industry is extremely stressful. One major reason is the weather, which has a huge impact on meeting targets especially in the Philippines, where the weather can change suddenly. It can be extremely hot one moment, and then, in the blink of an eye, a heavy downpour begins.
In other industries, operations can continue even when it rains, as long as there is adequate shelter. However, in construction, it is much more difficult. For example, if there is a scheduled concrete pouring and a sudden heavy rain occurs, the work may have to be canceled or if it continues, the quality can be affected.
I’ve noticed that people in operations tend to be short-tempered and easily get angry. Maybe it’s because of the pressure when deadlines are not met, especially in such a demanding environment.

When I was hired by the construction company I previously worked for, I was warned that the boss was very strict and had a strong temper. For me, having a strict boss was fine. I believed that leaders need to have strong personalities for people to follow them. So when I was given that warning, I didn’t think of it negatively.
On our first day of meeting, I noticed that he seemed a bit strict, but it was something I could understand. However, as time went by, I realized that he would easily get angry even over small things. For instance, if someone took a little longer to answer the company phone when he called, he would immediately get upset. In reality, it’s not always possible to notice a call right away, especially when you’re very busy. Still, at that time, I brushed it off since I considered it a minor issue.
There came a point when even asking simple questions would trigger his anger. I found myself confused, not knowing how to handle him anymore. Eventually, it started to affect my sleep, my mental and psychological aspect was already affected.
Despite that, the benefits were really good. In my more than a year with the company, I reached a point where I had to weigh everything and ask myself if it was still worth staying. I began to consider my mental health more seriously. There were nights when I couldn’t sleep, and even just seeing his name appear on my phone when he called would make me anxious. I didn’t want to live like that every day.
So despite the attractive benefits and high salary, I chose to leave the company. Because in the end, what is money for if you’re no longer happy? If you’re constantly anxious and living in fear, no amount of salary can truly compensate for that.
Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!

Sometimes, employee leaves the company because of co-workers esp immediate superiors.
I know the feeling, had and IS once that was really stressful.
Going to work has become a burden
It’s much better to go to work feeling excited, not already tired before the day has even begun.
