How Solar Lights Make a Difference in Our Community

The Philippines is one of the countries that is frequently affected by tropical storms and typhoons. Every year, we experience numerous storms, and some of them become extremely powerful, reaching super typhoon strength.

Whenever a super typhoon hits, it can be very difficult for us, especially when it causes widespread damage to the power infrastructure. In some cases, it can take up to a month for electricity to be fully restored, particularly when many power poles and lines are knocked down. This is one of the reasons why having a reliable alternative source of electricity, such as solar power, is so important to us.

Since we can’t afford to switch our entire household’s electricity consumption to solar yet because the cost is still quite high, we decided to start small by focusing on solar lights. Even though it’s just a simple alternative, they have already been a huge help, especially during power outages caused by typhoons.

Ideally, we would love to have our entire power supply come from solar energy someday. It would be especially beneficial for us because the weather here can get extremely hot, and we are also preparing for the possibility of another Super El Niño. Having solar power would not only give us a more reliable source of electricity but could also help us cope better with the increasing heat and frequent power interruptions.

Although we already have a few solar lights, my brother recently purchased two more to make our yard brighter at night. We no longer need to use electricity-powered lights outdoors, which is also helpful when no one is home for several days, especially when we travel to Cebu. Even when the house is unoccupied, the outside of our home remains well-lit, which gives us peace of mind and is especially important because we have a dog at home.

One thing I really appreciate about solar lights is that they help us save on our electricity bill, especially now that electric rates seem to keep increasing. In our area, many street lights and households have already switched to solar lights, which is especially useful during typhoons and power outages because we can still have light even when the electricity goes out.

For us, solar lights may be a simple investment, but they make a big difference. They help us save money, provide reliable lighting, and give us peace of mind whenever a storm comes our way.
