How Often Do You Spend Time with Your Parents?

Since I was a child, I have always been closer to my mother than to my father. Maybe it was because we grew up with our father often away from home. He was in Cebu most of the time while we were in Leyte. Back then, I was always one of the children who assisted my mother in the kitchen, especially when slicing ingredients for the food she cooked to sell in the canteen.

Since then, the kitchen has naturally become our bonding place. We would cook different kinds of food together. While I sliced the ingredients and she cooked, we would talk a lot, laugh, and share stories. That was how my mom and I spent time together.

Up until now, food is still our bonding activity. We cook, eat, and chat together. There was a time when I was away from her for more than three years, and during that time I really missed those simple moments with her. Then one day, I realized that my mother is getting older. Because of that, I want to spend as much time as I can with her while we are still both able to walk together, go out together, and share meals together.

While I am here at home, we really make the most of our time together. Whenever we cook, both of us are always in the kitchen. If I’m the one cooking, she assists me, and if she’s the one cooking, I assist her. That has always been our simple but meaningful way of bonding.

Those small moments may seem ordinary to other people, but to me they mean a lot. The laughter we share in the kitchen, the stories we exchange while preparing food, and the meals we enjoy together are memories that I truly treasure. They remind me that happiness can be found in the simplest things, especially when shared with someone you love.

When I spent time with my mother, of course I also spent time with my father. I lived in Cebu for a few years, and during that time I was also able to spend time with my father and bond with him. Now that I am here, this time is for my mom, and I am grateful that I have the chance to be with her again.

I know that time passes quickly, and moments like these will not last forever. That is why I try to appreciate every opportunity I have to spend time with her. For me, being able to cook, walk, and share stories with my mother is already a blessing, and these are the memories I will always carry with me wherever life takes me.
