Adding Pak Choi to Our Mini Farm

Happy Thursday Hivers!

Even before we started cultivating our mini farm, I had already been looking for Pak Choi seeds. Pak Choi is a variety of pechay, and I personally prefer its taste over the variety commonly grown in our area, which we locally call Bisayang pechay.

I checked one of the most popular seed stores in our area, but they didn't have any Pak Choi seeds available. My mother also visited several other stores, but unfortunately, none of them carried Pak Choi either.

Since Pak Choi seeds are not available in our locality, I decided to wait until my trip to Cebu and buy them there instead.

A few weeks ago, my mother and I went grocery shopping at Metro Supermarket. While checking through the different products, I was excited to discover that they also sold vegetable seeds.

We checked the available varieties, and I was thrilled when we found Pak Choi seeds. After searching for them for quite some time, it was a pleasant surprise to finally see them available locally.

Of course, we didn't leave empty-handed. We purchased Pak Choi seeds, melon seeds, and a purple variety of lettuce that caught our attention. I was especially happy to finally get my hands on Pak Choi seeds, as it was one of the vegetables I had been hoping to grow in our mini farm from the very beginning.

The next day, I immediately sowed the Pak Choi and melon seeds. I only planted a few melon seeds, but I sowed a larger number of Pak Choi seeds. After a few weeks, the seedlings started to grow, and this is how they look now.

Actually, last week I already prepared the area where I planned to transfer the seedlings. I planted them directly on the ground, but I made sure to add healthy soil to improve their growing condition.

This morning, I transplanted the larger seedlings that were already strong enough. To help them survive the hot weather, I used banana trunk as a shade to protect them from the heat.

I read that this variety of pechay is ideally suited for cooler climates. However, despite the hot weather in our area, I still decided to try growing it and am hoping that they will survive and adapt well.
