A Mother’s Sacrifice: What She Is Willing to Do for Her Child

Happy Friday Hivers!

In the first company where I worked, they did not immediately terminate employees, especially those who went AWOL. Although the company handbook clearly stipulated that seven consecutive working days of AWOL would result in termination, they still gave employees a chance. Even if an employee had been absent for as long as two months without reporting to work, the company would still allow them an opportunity to explain and return.

Aside from conducting counseling sessions, one of my responsibilities was also to conduct home visits for employees who went AWOL. However, if the employee lived far from the company’s location, we would instead send them a notice to return to work. If they still failed to report back after three notices, a Notice of Termination would then be issued.

There was one employee who had already been issued a Notice of Termination because she never returned to the company after three notices were sent to her. A few days after the notice was issued, a woman came to the office and said she was the mother of the terminated employee.

When I saw her, I could clearly see the deep worry on her face. She looked very stressed and troubled. When I started talking to her, she suddenly burst into tears. She explained that her daughter had been sick. The last information the company received was that she was anemic, so she had been advised to rest and was given medication by the doctor for anemia. The company doctor also advised her to return after a week for laboratory tests and a follow-up check on her condition, but she never came back.

After that, the company made a series of inquiries about her whereabouts through phone calls and letters. However, she could not be contacted, and there was no response to any of the letters sent to her.

The mother described her daughter’s condition, saying that large lumps had grown all over her body, many of which were filled with pus. She said her daughter had already become very thin and extremely weak. Since they did not have enough money for medical treatment, she had not been able to bring her to the hospital.

She also shared that she had received the notices sent by the company. However, she thought that her daughter was already too weak to travel. When she received the termination letter, that was when she finally decided to borrow money so she could personally come to the company and face the situation.

Despite feeling very embarrassed, she still asked the company for help for her daughter. When I informed my boss about the situation, we organized voluntary contributions among the employees. Since her employment had already been terminated, the company could no longer release funds, so we worked together to gather some money to give to his mother and to help buy food.

To verify whether what she said was true, we asked someone we knew who lived near their town (though not an employee of the company) to visit their home. That person later sent us photos of the employee, and she had indeed become extremely thin and weak.

I will never forget the words of her mother: “I am very ashamed to ask for help, but for the sake of my child, I am willing to set aside my pride.” A mother truly has the strength to do everything for her child. Hearing those words, I did not hesitate to help, because I saw a mother whose only concern was the well-being of her daughter.

A few days later, the mother informed us that her daughter had already passed away.

That experience reminded me that behind every employee is a family carrying their own silent struggles. Sometimes what we see in the workplace is only a small part of a much deeper story. It also showed me the incredible strength of a mother’s love, how she can set aside her pride, endure hardship, and face the world, all for the sake of her child.
