That's basically it, it's a super simple language when it comes to talking about the day's events, small talk, etc., so I think that's why my mind does that. Also, because it has no Latin root, so many things can't simply be translated like they can between Euro languages, and my whole family has trouble with certain phrases or words that don't translate, we often use a a little English when speaking Khmer and a little Khmer when speaking English.

Same here, now with Dutch and English phrases and someone like me who also grew up hearing adults speaking Sranan Tongo, I mix in words from that language also.

I see a similarity when watching anime with subtitles, that they sometimes can't translate words literally into English. For instance "itadakimasu" is more than just "thank you", because of the philosophical meaning behind it.
