Funny you mention that, water rights laws in the US and any power produced from them often belongs to the electric company, so that is a sensitive subject. In Cambodia things are a little more wild west and I'm sure as long as we didn't create an eyesore or dam the creek in any way, we could easily generate electricity from the creek for our needs. Years ago I remember something called a JackRabbit (I think), and it was basically a water turbine for small streams. portable and small. I think a Cambodian version could be made with a boat propeller and a car alternator or something like that.

So I was going to reply extensively, but I will write a post. Many people use recycled car parts for this. Lots of info online. I have a really cool instruction manual on pdf how to make a micro hydro generator in a regular 5 gallon bucket. It requires a nice "head" (elevation drop for the water) but it is completely non intrusive on nature and is virtually invisible. But like I said, let me get it into a post.
Thanx for the inspiration!
