Blade of Darkness or as it was originally known in its days of release to the public, Severance: Blade of Darkness, is an action video game (Hack and Slash) and some elements of role (RPG) in third person, which was developed by the now defunct Spanish video game company Rebel Act Studios, based in the city of Madrid Spain, and was composed mostly by staff of Spanish nationality, so we can say with full confidence that Blade of Darkness is a Spanish video game.
The year of release of Blade of Darkness was February 26, 2001, reaching a good amount of sales in Spain and Europe in general, but it would suffer from a great wave of piracy that caused the economic collapse of the company Rebel Act, in addition to a bad marketing campaign throughout America by its distribution company, the very famous Codemasters.
The video game has a very innovative graphics engine (for its time of release) that produces lighting effects and texture quality that for its time of release caused a very important impact among gamers of the early 2000s, because this graphic engine of Blade of Darkness allowed a combat and displacement in real time, which produced effects of movement and attack very fluid and added to the use of combos that gave the gamer a unique experience for the time, for the latter reason among others, today it is considered one of the forerunners of the Souls genre.
From the megalithic mines of Kelbegen, which are part of the dwarven domain in the Lore of Blade of Darkness, we begin today's adventure. The first thing you will notice that makes the journey difficult is the constant cliffs that we can find from the beginning of the journey. Therefore, it is always important to take every step in these dwarven lands with caution.
Another reason why caution is so important when taking every step in Kelbegen is the constant traps that the dwarves have left for unwanted visitors, such as the huge stone balls that threaten to crush us in their path.
What a Dodge huh? Very quickly we encountered the first orc soldier who put up a good fight, but luckily we already have Tukaram's senses sharpened, so he couldn't really touch us.
One thing you can always do in Blade of Darkness is to use our enemies' traps against themselves. For example, here we avoided a direct fight against an orc chief by using a giant dwarven boulder which crushed him without any difficulty.
Always keep in mind that ranged weapons are available (if you have ammunition of course xD ) to get around and defeat some enemies. For example, up ahead there was a bridge that was about to collapse, and we actually noticed them when we saw that the orc soldier in front of us didn't want to cross the bridge. So we used the first person mode + bow to shoot him down from a distance and then only worry about jumping over the bridge without falling into the void.
This orc soldier had a 150 life potion and some arrows that I was able to loot from him. It is important in this game to try to defeat as many enemies as possible by your own hand, because like any game with RPG elements, experience is the most important thing to level up your character.
My goodness! The physics of the Blade of Darkness graphics engine are truly amazing, especially considering the year of this videogame (2001). For example, watch how the bridge in front of you is destroyed when there is an earthquake in the area and huge stones fall from the mountain, causing the bridge to collapse.
Damn! That was a hard parry, in fact that parry broke my chaos sword ha ha ha. But I got covered because I have another one :) . In this game, the parry is an art in itself, because you need to hace a great timing in order to do it properly.
Note: About the last thing I mentioned, a problem with this game, and this is what can be difficult to sort out sometimes, is the inaccuracy of the hitbox in the game, making that in some ocations would be very difficult to hit with precision to some enemies whose hitboxes are not well defined. But all the last part can be forgiven if you take on count the year that this game was developed.
And after a bloody battle and some necessary Load games xD I was able to defeat this orc boss, which was very difficult to defeat, as he was equipped with a poisoned sword that when it touched us once, it poisoned us and made us lose life quickly. After defeating him we leveled up to the long awaited level 5.
I finally got my long-awaited first combo attack, the Super Kill combo, which can be performed from level 5 onwards with the Chaos Sword, which is the sword I currently have.
Omg look at those shadows! The shadows and some lighting effects of this somewhat remastered version by GOG (Good All Games) is really amazing. Another example can be clearly seen in the image above, when we enter a network of tunnels that lead us into the depths of the Kelbegen mines.
These little bastards...
I really dunno if it's because the hitboxes in the game don't work properly, or if it's a feature of these little bastards that makes them so hard to hit, even with big weapons like the Chaos Sword. But here's the thing youguys, you can easily defeat them by using the torch and clicking + down arrow to strike low and hit them.
Using what has been learned. And so it was that I started using Tukaram's Super Kill combo, which although devastating, you have to know how to use it because it does a twist that leaves you very exposed to hits from enemies. Actually other orcs I defeated managed to land several hits that left me pretty badly injured when I was learning how to master the combo.
Hey, always keep an eye out for quivers along the way, because they are usually quite hidden and these are the ones that provide us with the most arrows for our bow.
Again, those pesky spiders... although weak in stamina, they can be really hard to hit, not to mention the fact that they are poisonous and if you don't have an antidote they will reduce your health bar quickly. On the other hand, antidots are really scarce in this game.
I really had to resort to looking for food everywhere, because as you can see on Tukaram's back, I have really been badly injured. On the other hand, I think it's a cool detail how the wounds look on our character when we have a low life bar :)
Finally, we were surrounded by orc soldiers in the depths of the Kelbegen mines, these are all very high level soldiers, and with the health bar so low they will make defeating them a very difficult task. But I'll leave that for the next post ;)
By the way and first of all, thank you very much for reading me until here. I am very glad that you took the time to stop by my post and enjoy this fourth mini-guide of this classic video game and precursor of the Souls genre as it is Blade of Darkness.
Greetings!
All the images & Gif's showed on this post are taken from my pc Screen.
Credits to the extinct Spanish Company Rebel Act and all his former workers that work hard to bring us this Piece of art like it's Blade of Darkness.

Welcome my friend
Good post! it is a unique game at the time! I liked it a lot when I was very young, in fact the first time I played it was at a friend's house, he lent me his game and I installed it on my PC, it was an experience both difficult and good, I played it when I was 11 to 13 years old.
Greetings from Venezuela
Hey mate, it is awesome that you have played a physical copy of this gem in those times (y) . And I can understand that experience you had, because the first time I played it I was almost a kid too and it turned out the way you describe it xD
Cheers and thanks for stopping by bro
