Greetings to all Splinterlands players and Midnight Letters community! This is my entry to this week's Community Engagement Challenge. In today's post I'll write about upgrading my legendary Foundation cards. Legendary cards in Splinterlands are like Queens in chess. They are the strongest cards in the game. Upgrading them only makes them stronger. But we have to be conscious on our upgrades because not all legendary cards are created equal. Foundation cards are cheap but our funds can be spent elsewhere like in the Modern set so we have to be thoughtful on the upgrades we are making.

How to Upgrade Cards

To upgrade cards you just need to combine copies of them to take them to the next level. In the case of legendary Foundations cards, the maximum level it can reach is level two. We only need three copies of legendary cards to upgrade them to two. To obtain cards, we can earn them as rewards from the game but it takes forever to get legendary cards because the odds of getting them from rewards are low. I usually get common and rare cards. It's easier to get cards by buying them. Just go to the market and you can find the cards you need.

The legendary cards are not priced equally. Some are more expensive than others. Their price is because of their availability and usefulness. For example, Mystic Scaleweaver is the most expensive. The price is justified because it's arguably the strongest card in the Frontier format. Next is A'lan Musketeer who has Double Strike skill. It's below Mystic Scaleweaver because it's a ranged card. If it were a magic card then its usefulness will be better and will be more expensive.

Benefits of Upgrading Cards
Upgrading cards will increase their stats and may gain new abilities. But we have to be discerning if we really need to upgrade cards as they are not created equal. Some cards are better than others. For example, the Agniavan Salamander only gains one health stat after upgrading. To me, it's not worth it to buy cards and upgrade them.

Most cards have better benefits from upgrade like additional attack. I'd pay to have my cards gain additional attacks. It wins games and worth the price.

Little Sister has the best gain upon upgrading. It gains one attack plus flying skill. Little Sister cards are cheap so it's better to buy than waiting to get it from reward chests.

I made upgrades to all my legendary cards by buying them except for Agniavan Salamander and Celestial Guardian that I kept at level one.

Upgrading these cards made me win more games and made me a better player in the Frontier format. I also enjoyed playing with higher level cards with more stats and unlocked skills.
But to make use of the upgraded units, I had to upgrade my archons too. I also bought those to raise their level to three, enabling them summon level two legendary cards.

Conclusion
If you want to become a better player and enjoy the game more, I suggest upgrading your cards. It's frustrating to lose to players with higher level cards so don't wait by getting them from rewards. Buy the archons and legendary cards and you will be more challenging in the Frontier format. The cards in the Foundation set are cheaper than other sets so it will not break your wallet to spend some of your funds in them. If you're having fun playing Splinterlands, then it's worth it to spend some money in them just like watching a movie or buying video games.
