Is the paid unlock only for 30 seconds? Or for the duration of my time in the game? I didn't understand that part.

Regarding your question: the paid unlock (the “View Top N” option on the Explore screen) lasts 30 seconds from the moment the payment is confirmed—it doesn’t last for your entire session in the game. During those 30 seconds, you’ll see the expanded network, and after that, it returns to normal (but you can pay again if you want to expand it once more).
The idea is that each payment unlocks “a closer look” for a short time, rather than being a permanent unlock. This way, the game remains fair for everyone and generates a small amount of revenue for the game.
