The Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg

The Russian Museum was the first state museum of Russian art and is the most important in the world with these characteristics. It is dedicated entirely to national artists and with the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, they are the most prominent in their specialty. It was founded in 1895 by Tsar Nicholas II to exhibit the works of local painters to the public.

The Russian Museum occupies four palaces located in the historic center of Saint Petersburg. They are buildings that respond to the ancient Russian architectural style of Baroque (Stroganov Palace) and Neoclassicism (Marble Palace, Michael's Palace).

From the main avenue of Saint Petersburg (Nevsky Avenue), there is a beautiful view of the monumental construction. The main building of the Russian Museum, on Arts Square, is the former Palace of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich, youngest son of Tsar Paul. Another building is the Stroganov Palace, a wonderful example of the second Russian baroque, built by the famous architect Bartolomé Rastreli. And the Marble Palace, built in neoclassical style, is another of the museum's rooms.

The Russian Museum houses a permanent exhibition of the entire artistic history of Russia, from the 19th and 20th centuries, comprising different genres, schools and art movements. The collection initially focused on oil paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, and applied and decorative arts; which totaled about 1,500 objects. But thanks to donations from private collectors and agreements with other national museums, with the purpose of exchanging artistic treasures, it doubled. And now there are nearly 400,000 objects that make it up.

As time went by, the collection expanded not only in quantity, but also diversified in terms of its subject matter. It currently contains Creole art, numismatic art and modern art. The Russian Museum also plays a fundamental role in coordinating the academic and methodological work of all art museums in Russia.

The Russian Museum is popularly called "encyclopedia of national art." Very important temporary exhibitions are frequently organized here and are a true cultural event for the city.
