Hello everyone, how are you. I hope your day is going well. Something intimate to me, something that is neglected and yet has so much strength in lightening life I wanted to tell you about to-day. It is all great along the little things, those insignificant points that put a spin in a day.
Have you ever seen how with one little thing you can totally feel better? A neighbor smiling, tea in the morning, the gentle breeze on your face as you come home. But none of these things immediately appear to be a big deal, but they continue to remain in the heart long after the big events that we think will somehow constitute the main elements of our happiness are over.
Great Michael, mornings are the place where it all begins with me. I stop because of the way the sunlight sneaks in the room, and warms everything it touches. I might be in a hurry or tired, but as long as I see that gentle light, I think of new beginning. It is similar to the world murmuring that you may always get a new day to start.
Sounds also play their part. It can be the pattering rain on the window, the scream of a friend on a cell phone, or the flow of steps on a deserted street. The intuitive sounds produce some background melody that helps me feel vivacious when I find the time to observe.
Food is another quiet joy. Not the much ado but little luxuries as a coffee on a wet windy afternoon or a piece of juicy fruit that takes you back to childhood. It is while eating something simple but meaningful that I am reminded that joy is found not in luxury but instead in appreciation.
And of selfless service, the latitude of there is now. The person standing up, letting me through the door, someone sending me a short message, or a stupid joke that ends up making me laugh even more than I thought. These little signs keep me in mind that I will never feel lonely in this world and it cheers up the hours better than most of us notice.
When the world finally quiets down at the end of the day I end up thinking about these little things. The cloudless stars on above, the cold air of night, or mere rest amid quiet. Nor do they require attendance, nor try with thankfulness upon me.
We always anticipate something monumental to give our days purpose but what I have gotten to know is that it is often the little things that really count. Like ghosts distilled into spider-grains they are all around us, lurking, so to speak.
Or perhaps the secret to a special day does not lie in the pursuit of something or other extraordinary. It is learning to preserve those little sparks which are already here.
What about you? What are some of the little things that have brightened your day?
