My Nineties Friday Edition Week 7!

redbubble.com

Welcome to #NinetiesFriday ! This is a new event started up by my good friend @geneeverett in which you can share anything from the 1990's, and I mean anything (within reason, lol.) One lucky random winner will receive 6 HSBI units, three from me and three from Gene. If you have any questions feel free to ask either myself or Gene and we will be glad to help. Let's get the ball rolling!

If you lived in the 1990's you will recognize one of these. The VHS tape was the universal way to watch or record just about any movie or program you wanted. Personal camcorders used these to record home movies, and I still have a bunch of these tapes in boxes somewhere around here. You also needed a VCR (videocassette recorder) to play the tapes, way back before DVD's or Blue Rays! These machines are becoming almost impossible to find today. If you wanted to rent a movie in the nineties the most common place to go was Blockbuster Video. And affixed to every box or tape you would usually see the sticker above.

One of the painful parts of these old tapes is you needed to rewind them after viewing to return the tape to the rental store. If you failed to do so you were usually charged a rewind fee on your account that you had to pay up before you could rent more movies. Thus the reminder on the rental to "Be Kind, Rewind". It doesn't get much more 1990's than these and grunge music!

And just a quick fun fact, there still is one Blockbuster Video store in existence located in Bend, Oregon!

A couple of classic movies from the decade that might have come on one of these tapes were "Pulp Fiction" or "The Big Lebowski".

Pulp Fiction

themoviedb.org

If you have to think of a movie that was pure 1990's this is one of the first to come to mind for most people. Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino with an all star cast of John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, and Cristopher Walken just to name a few. If you haven't seen it you need to add to your to do list. I couldn't tell you how many times I've seen it but it's still fun to watch again and again. Here's a taste with the official trailer:

The Big Lebowski

local-pittsburgh.com

Another classic 1990's film by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, starring Jeff Bridges as "The Dude". Also starring John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, and Julianne Moore. This is hilarious movie that's well worth watching more than once. The Coen brothers yet again put together another brilliant movie adding to their long resume of success, here's the official trailer:

And now let's transition into some tunes from the nineties!

Nirvana

fanpop.com

What a great picture of Nirvana with Kurt Cobain looking like a geek! They were a legendary band that changed the face of the music industry in the early 1990's. Although they only produced two albums before Cobain's death the music has stood the test of time and is still popular to this day. This band's demise led to the formation of the Dave Grohl's the Foo Fighters. Legendary in more way than just one. Here's "In Bloom":

The Offspring

Another band of legends, they originated in Garden Grove, California in 1984. It took them ten long years to finally make it into the mainstream, but produced some great music before they became well known. This song I've shared before but it's such a great fit for the decade, even with a mention of the Ricky Lake Show. I'll include a Wikipedia link to information about the show in the references if you were too young to ever it. Here is "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)":

Metallica

nme.com

Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 Metallica has become one of the most influential bands in heavy metal over their career spanning decades until today. The album Metallica (often called the black album) was released in 1991, it had taken the better part of a year to produce and went way over budget costing well over a million dollars. It also is credited with leading to two of the band member's divorcing their wives. The album was a huge success selling over 30 million copies worldwide, not too shabby! Here is one of their classics from the album "Enter Sandman":

And because I spent most of the nineties living in countries that only really spoke Spanish, I like to include at least one or two songs from the era that I would hear all the time. Both of these songs were very big hits in the late 90's into the early 2000's.

La Oreja de Van Gogh

shangay.com

La Oreja de Van Gogh (Van Gogh's Ear) is a Spanish rock band from San Sebastian, Spain. Formed in 1996 their first album "Dile Al Sol" launched them to international fame. Their lead singer Amaia Montero's unique singing style was what I really enjoyed when I first heard them. They were one of my personal favorite bands from Spain for several years. This song comes from their first album and is called "El 28" (The 28):

Paulina Rubio

tn8.tv

I'm stretching it a little on this one, it was recorded in 1999 and released in 2000, but still kind of 90's. She is a well known Mexican singer/ songwriter. Like many of the successful Latin musical artists she started her career as a child in a band known as "Timbriche". In the 1990's she launched a solo career and finally found international success with her ablum Paulina. She has become the Princess of Latin Pop over her long career. I recall first seeing the video for this song in Puerto Rico in 2000 but it has the feel of the 90's techno music. This is "Y Yo Sigo Aqui" (And I'm Still Here):

That will wrap up my edition of #NinetiesFriday , I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below. Thank you so much for all of your support! Have a great weekend.

Pulp Fiction! One of my favourite movies of all time, and more often or not the one I answer with when asked for favourite film.
Nirvana is pure 90s as in grunge although Dave Grohl really is the music genius and musician extraordinaire to me!
