One of the greatest writers of Bengali literature, Sarat Chandra Chatto Padhyay has very subtly portrayed the emotions, love, social bonds and the position of women in human life in his writings. 'Parineeta' is not just a love story, it is a complex social narrative. Set in the context of Kolkata in the early 20th century, this novel is a touching story of class discrimination, social constraints and the protection of women's dignity. 'Parineeta' is an indispensable read for those who want to enjoy classical Bengali literature.
“The novel centers around two neighboring families, Lalita and Shekhar. Lalita is an orphan girl who lives in the house of her poor maternal uncle, Gurucharan. On the other hand, Shekhar is the youngest son of the wealthy and influential Naveen Roy. Lalita has been raised in Shekhar’s house since childhood, and has arranged all his affairs. Although their relationship is based on affection and trust, it develops into a deep love over time. When Lalita, acting like a child, puts a garland around Shekhar’s neck on an auspicious day, she considers herself a ‘Parineeta’ (i.e., a married woman). But the obstacles in their relationship are Shekhar’s father’s arrogance and Lalita’s maternal uncle’s financial poverty. Naveen Roy wants Shekhar to marry the daughter of a wealthy businessman.
Amidst this tension, Girin, a liberal and well-off young man, appears, who is Lalita’s maternal uncle. Saves from debt. Girin's selfless love for Lalita and Shekhar's suspicion and misunderstanding push their love to a deep crisis. Lalita's self-respect and Shekhar's self-exploration lead the story to the climax, where true love triumphs over all social divisions and misunderstandings.
