Humayun Ahmed, one of the most popular writers of Bengali literature, has won the hearts of readers through his numerous novels, plays and stories. However, some of his books leave such a deep impression on our minds that it is not easy to get out of them. One such novel is ‘Apeksa’. This book, published in 1997, is not just a love story, it is a deep philosophy of human survival.

The main character of the novel ‘Apeksa’ is the story of a happy middle-class family with Hasanuzzaman, his wife Suraiya and their only child Emon. But their peaceful life is suddenly thrown into uncertainty when Hasanuzzaman mysteriously disappears one night. From then on, Suraiya begins an endless and heartbreaking wait. This wait is not just for her husband to return, it is like a continuation of life. Suraiya does not know whether her husband is alive or dead, but her mind tells her that he will return. This belief keeps her alive every day, gives her the strength to raise her son.
It would be wrong to see this book as just a story. Its main attraction is the perfect reflection of middle-class life, which Humayun Ahmed has portrayed with extraordinary skill in the daily life of an ordinary family. Their happiness and sorrow, small demands and deep love between them are etched in the reader's mind. Moreover, the author has portrayed the relationship between husband and wife, the bond between mother and son, and the tension in the relationship with other side characters with great sensitivity. Especially Suraiya's loneliness and Emon's innocent questions touch the reader's heart.
The most important aspect of this book is that it does not see 'waiting' as just an incident, but as an essential part of life. A famous quote from the book is, "Waiting is very necessary for human survival. Waiting is the tonic for human survival." This sentence captures the essence of the entire novel. It teaches us that it is possible to live with hope even in the most difficult times of life.
If you want to read a book that will make you laugh, cry and at the same time make you think anew about life, then 'Apekhsa' is for you. This is not just the story of a lost person, it is the story of the indomitable strength, love and hope within people. Humayun Ahmed's simple, fluent language and the depth of the story will captivate you until the last page. After reading the book, you may also feel that at some point in life, we all wait for something or the other. And that waiting is what keeps us alive, shows us the way. And so today I am writing about the book and ending here, thank you all.
