Goodness is in us, no matter how poor we are

In Nigeria poverty is widespread in many places and many people live day to day barely scraping by The streets are full of people struggling children playing without shoes and men and women working in the sun without complaint as if they are used to a harsh life But in the midst of all this there is something that makes me believe that we are still fine and that is the kindness and altruism that I see among them.

Once I was walking in a simple neighborhood and I saw a man selling fruits and there was a little boy standing next to him looking at the fruit with an eye full of desire but it was clear that he did not have money The man without thinking took an apple and gave it to the boy with a smile as if it were something ordinary and the boy took it as if it were a treasure This scene is very simple but its meaning is great because the man himself is not rich maybe all he has is the fruits he sells but despite that he cannot see anyone in need and leave himself.

These situations happen every day someone shares his food with his neighbor someone helps a stranger in the street a mother gives the last of her possessions so that her children can eat These little things are what confirm to me that poverty has never been the reason for our humanity to end on the contrary sometimes it is the reason for hearts to become purer and more compassionate towards each other.

The government and economic policies may not help the poor as they are supposed to but people still have hope and there is still goodness among them When I see people helping each other without expecting anything in return I say to myself We are still fine and there are still hearts that feel Poverty can steal many things from us but as long as there is love and mercy it will never be able to steal our humanity.
