A bit over 2 weeks ago I posted about some failed casting experiments and mentioned I got a new smaller diameter nozzle for my 3d printers, link to that post here
Well in this post I got deeper into this topic.
Usually printers come with a 0.4mm diameter nozzle(the hole where the plastic comes out)
Different nozzles sizes are good for different things a thicker nozzle will be able to lay down material faster finishing the prints faster however you get worse detail as the bigger layers and the width of the layer line can catch less details.
A thinner nozzle has the opposite effect it lays down less material and takes more time but you can get more detail.
Now this model is not a great example as the details are not too crazy but it's a fast print so it's a good bench mark.
We start with the standard 0.4 nozzle and 0.2mm layer height right below you can see how it looks like, notice the lines yep not the nicest, this took about 15 minutes to print.
Then I swapped the nozzle with a 0.2 and started with a 0.1 layer height, as you can see bellow it's a lot harder to see the lines and it would potentially show more details in a more complicated model.
Then I tried a 0.05 layer height with the same 0.2 nozzle, in this one it's even harder to see the layer lines and it's a lot more smoother and has room for even more details, however it didn't come out great, that is a matter of messing with the settings on the printer since it's a stretch from the standard 0.4 nozzle and the usual layer height range of 0.15-0.2
Since then I got some more nozzle sizes as well as some extras because they dont' last forever they get worn down over time and sometimes there can be a clog that can't be cleared easily.
along with the standard 0.4 and this new more fine 0.2 nozzle I also got a 0.6 0.8 and a 1.0 these bigger nozzles will give me faster prints but at the cost of details, they all have their uses.
There is a special print mode called vase mode and in that mode the nozzle goes around in a spiral and is only one wall thick this is not great for every model but it allows you to make some very fast prints (usually useful for making vases hence the name) this however means that the part is rather flimsy, however if using a bigger nozzle the wall will be thicker and hence more strong.

This is great....
@bitcoinman ... You've got to print thisππππ
But the smaller the nozzle time, the more time it takes and greater risk for the nozzle tip getting damaged... Right?
I always wondered about print times. You mentioned the first one was fifteen minutes but didn't mention the other two. As they were smaller nozzles I would expect much slower times.. Curious.
That is as much an art as a science... You are learning and improving and making some cool stuff.
