The Doc Marten, Official Shoe of Nineties Friday!

etsy.com

ebay.com

Back in the 1990's grunge ruled the fashion world, whether you liked it or not. And the shoes that were among the most popular were the Doc Martens. At one point I owned a pair of these and they lasted forever. I think they could have survived a nuclear war, a zombie apocalypse, and even an alien invasion. Everything but an ex-wife stealing everything I owned including the vintage Doc Martens. These were an integral part of the fashion in the nineties, I'm not sure I ever understood why, but they were!

These days vintage shoes in excellent condition command a very high resale price. Looks like the 90's are coming back in style... I thought it might be fun to share that blast from the past to kick off a post for Nineties Friday. It's a weekly event where you can share just about anything from the 1990's , you're imagination really is the limit! You can join the Nineties Friday community and post there or just add the tag #ninetiesfriday . Thanks to @geneeverett for starting this fun weekly insanity!

My good friend @davedickeyyall will tell you that the nineties absolutely sucked, and the eighties were much better. I grew in the eighties and they were awesome, but I had a lot of fun in the nineties too! That being said I spent most of the decade in South America or the Caribbean...

King of the Hill

slashfilm.com

This animated television show ran from 1997 until 2009 in it's first run. Much like The Simpsons it was aimed at more of an adult audience that old cartoon classics. It has been picked up for a reboot for Hulu, so it's days of running may not yet be over! It revolved around Hank Hill and his family and friends living in Arlen, TX. A fictitious town created for the show. It's a hilarious show about an ultra uptight, conservative Hank interacting with his neighbors and the world around him.

I've added a clip below of some of the funniest moments from the show, it's pretty good.

And now a little music from the 1990's...

Foo Fighters

explosion.com

Formed in 1993 in Seattle, Washington this band of legends continues to write and perform to this day. The loss of Taylor Hawkins in 2022 was a shock to us all. Fortunately, they have continued on. Dave Grohl assembled the band after the end of Nirvana and went on to produce some of the most iconic music of the 1990's. One of my favorites has always been: "Everlong"

Weezer

altpress.com

Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1992 this band was offered a recording contract less than a year later. In 1994 they released self titled debut album and that produced multiple hits and multi-platinum sales. One of my favorite songs off the album has always been: "Buddy Holly":

Rob Zombie

micoope.com.gt

Yes, I've shared Rob Zombie a few times, I'm just in the mood for some great rock music this morning. After forming the band "White Zombie" (named after the first ever zombie movie) in the mid 1980's they struggled to find a big following until they switched to heavy metal. In the early 1990's they had success on two of their albums before Rob went solo. In 1998 he released the album "Hellbilly Deluxe" that had several hit songs, the most memorable is always going to be: "Dragula":

Black Sabbath

resbytes.weebly.com

Now, I know what you are all going to say, Black Sabbath wasn't a 1990's band. That's where you would technically be wrong, they reissued "Iron Man" as an greatest hits album in 1992. So technically it is a nineties song, sort of... But it's still a lot of fun to listen to even if it was first released in the 1970's.

For those unfamiliar with Black Sabbath they were a band from the United Kingdom formed in 1968. Their iconic front man for many of those years was Ozzy Osbourne. They existed as a band until 2017 when they officially disbanded and called it a career. They produced some of the most influential songs in the rock and roll world that are still used in movies until this day. The were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2006. Here is their classic song "Ironman":

Because I spent most of my 1990's outside the US in countries that really only spoke Spanish, I like to throw in one or two songs from the era in Spanish!

Noelia

univision.com

Noelia is a Puerto Rican singer who came to fame in 1999 with the release of her self titled first album. She did not have a long lasting career as she only had one more hit a few years later, the first hit did make her an iconic part of the 1990's Latin American music scene. This song is "TĂș" (You):

That will wrap up this Friday's edition of #ninetiesfriday . I hope you enjoyed this walk down memory lane, it was fun for me. I'm looking forward to those new King of the Hill episodes, unfortunately Johnny Hardwick, who voiced Dale, passed away just over a year ago. Hopefully they can find someone who can match that voice. Not easy to do! If you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below, and thank you for all of your support. Have a great weekend everyone!

This is the first I've heard of Doc Martin work boots from the 90s.......
Not quite in the 90s..... but the sitcom TV series Doc Martin, became a big hit filmed over in Port Isaac Cornwall England!😀

They 've been around a long time, but for some reason they were big in the 90's. They were expensive though, and apparently still are!

NaN BEE

I looked them up on Amazon they are apparently very popular still!😀👍

NaN BEE

Oh yes, the Vintage shoes were a high quality piece.
I remember I had a pair and wore them all the time every time I left the house. I had the impression that they were all terrain, timeless and indestructible.
I walked with those things on for maybe thousands of miles and they still looked good.

Wow... I should search my house to find them.
But it's a shame, I'm sure they don't fit me anymore.

Old Doc Martens in good shape are not cheap to buy. They were made to last and are great shoes, any luck finding yours?

I think I kept them in a box, the problem is that I still can't find the box. 😅

I just browsed in a Dr. Marten's store last weekened. One pair cost around $200 in our currency.

Back in the 90's they were expensive, nowadays they're even more expensive. They're very well made and last for a very long time though! Maybe not as long as my combat boots have, but a long time!

I like the idea of remembering and sharing those golden days. The “King of the Hill” was a hoot, Hank Hill and his combo always got a laugh.
The music of the 90's is unforgettable. The Foo Fighters and their “Everlong” are always a classic, and Weezer with “Buddy Holly,” no way. Rob Zombie and Black Sabbath, that was really good rock. And Noelia, what memories with “You”.
Thanks for that walk through the past in my musical memory.

Thanks for taking the time to enjoy it! Not many people will bother with Noelia unless they're Spanish speakers, but that was a great song she had back then.

The rock music was fun picking some out, Black Sabbath didn't really fit, but it's still fun!

Hahah a nuclear war? 👀 That's funny. 😂 And well for me that's the best, when you buy something that last forever (quality matters) 💜

Everything but an ex-wife stealing everything I owned including the vintage Doc Martens.

Why would still steal it? It's men's shoes, unless she was probably going to resell them or something like that.
I think I've seen these type of shoes online, although they're probably not as tough as the ones in the 1990s but they look very tough

0 BEE

I'm sure it was to sell them because they would pull in over $100. She wasn't world's most honest person, far from it as a matter of fact.

They are very well built and meant to last. I would put them on par with my combat boots, but my combat boots are much more comfortable!

I got a good laugh at the Doc Martens. I owned a pair or two. I still have a pair of sandals. I found them to be of good quality and yes they were spendy.

King of the Hill. I watched a few of them but really didn't get into it too much. Weezer, Foo Fighters (The Best of You..playing in my head now), and Rob Zombie very popular and I often listened to all.

Great Friday 90's post well covered friend. One of these days I'll do one of my own! Take care

0 BEE

They weren't cheap, and they are still around and still not cheap. Glad you liked some of the music, good old rock n roll and you can't go wrong!

NaN BEE

The Doc. Martens.. what a memory! I didn't had a pair, but i remember of my high-school colleagues that had them... and they lasted for ages! No matter what treatment they will gave them, they were true quality boots. I remember in particular, one friend that had one pair, that insisted that we stump has hard as we could in the front part of the boot, that the metal semi circle that was beneath protect his toes... Ahaha

0 BEE

They still make them and are great shoes, but expensive. You can find many on sale second hand from the 1990's still in great shape. They were build to last!

NaN BEE

Even that I don't see them so often like in the 90's, I google it and there are available online!

I used to love King of the Hill. I kind of lost track of it and stopped watching it after a while. I don't know why. I had some knock off Doc's and then I had some Caterpillar boots that kind of looked like the opening photo. They are steel toe though, I actually still have them.

0 BEE

Great things to hang onto! I still have my combat boots, some of the best footwear I own. Most of King of the Hill I watched as re-runs, when it first started I was in Puerto Rico so I missed most of it. I always the character Dale though!

0 BEE

I think my biggest issue is steel toe boots aren't that great in the winter. They get much too cold here. I kind of want to get a nice pair of LL Bean boots, but they are so expensive!
