The Unexpected Turn

Just as she was about to quit her job, her boss offered her the promotion she stopped hoping for months ago.

Suzy walked into the office, determined to end all of it. All the years of working tirelessly, cleaning people’s messes, taking on jobs beyond her job description, and many more. Suzy was fed up. She put so much into the company, but all she got was more work and people taking the glory for things she did.

She had applied for the position of Director of Finance, which was opened after John, the previous Director of Finance resigned. She was next in line, yet she was deprived of the position. Despite being qualified for the job, Suzy still went ahead to beg for it, but despite everything, she was still denied the position, rather a new director was hired.

After making her findings, she discovered the reason for her denial was that she wasn’t married. The stakeholders in the company had a thing for employing and promoting “married” people over single folks. Such mentality in the 21st century.

Realizing that this was a loophole in the company and there was nothing anyone could do, she decided to resign herself to fate.

Carefully typing her resignation letter, Suzy made sure to state everything in the letter. Yes, this was her home for the last seven years, but a place that wasn’t interested in her growth just because she didn’t have a wedding band on her finger was not home, to say the least.

Neatly folded and placed in an envelope, Suzy made her way to the office.

Staring at the office for the last time and taking in every detail of the building, Suzy took a sharp breath and walked briskly to Mr. Charles's office.

“Good morning, Suzy,” came Mr. Charles' deep baritone voice.

“Good morning, Mr. Charles,” Suzy replied politely.

“I called your office 20 minutes ago and I was told you weren’t in”.

“Yes sir, I came in late today,” Suzy replied.

“Is everything fine?” Mr. Charles asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Yes sir, everything is fine.

“That’s great because I came bearing good news,” Charles said, grinning from ear to ear.

“Okay… what could that be?” Suzy asked.

“Congratulations, Suzy, you have just been promoted to Director of Finance, and this position comes with so many mouth watering benefits.” Mr. Charles said, smiling sheepishly.

“I have been what?” Suzy asked, astonished by the news.

“Promoted and effective tomorrow you are to resume at your new office.

Suzy stood still, lost in her tracks and utterly speechless.

Mr. Charles handed her the letter. Too shocked to speak, she opened the letter and the further she read, the wider her eyes grew in disbelief.

After reading the letter, she gave Mr. Charles a sad smile.

“I’ll think about the offer and get back to the management,” Suzy said.

“Think? Okay, take your time, we shall be waiting.” Said a puzzled Mr. Charles, who was trying so hard to hide his curiosity.

Leaving Mr. Charles’s office, a lot was going through Suzy’s mind but one thing was certain, the universe was trying to play some trick on her.

“This is going to be a very difficult decision, but my mind is made up, I am leaving this place!” Suzy said to herself, more determined than ever.
