As he stood at the airport gate, suitcase in hand, his phone lit up with a message that changed everything.
“We lost her Dayo.” Staring at the four words that sent his world crashing, Dayo cried out. He hits his fist continuously on one of the pillars, Dayo cried out in anguish. With the force he applied, one would have thought he was intentionally trying to hurt himself.
“Mr. Dayo, calm down. Calm down, sir.” Segun Dayo’s PA ran down as fast as he could after receiving the news of the death of Dayo’s wife too.
“Leave me alone!!” Dayo screamed slowly attracting passerbys.
“Leave me the fuck alone!! She’s freaking dead,” Dayo screamed louder as he tried to free himself from Segun’s grip.
“Sir, please calm down, let’s go inside,” Segun said, more frustrated than he had been in the six years he had worked with Dayo’s family.
“I want to die!! I want to join her over there.” Dayo cried profusely not minding who was watching or listening.
“She can’t be there alone Segun, she’s scared, she can’t.” Dayo said as he shook Segun controllably.
“I know sir, I know,” Segun said amid tears.
Laura wasn’t just a good employer but also a good friend to Segun. He didn’t only lose an employer but a true friend as well.
Segun tried so hard to fight the tears, the last thing he wanted was to cry instead of being strong for his friend and employer Segun.
“Segun I can’t do this life without her, I can’t”.
“I know sir, let’s go into the lounge sir.”
Some passerbys at the airport felt sorry for Dayo, watching him mourn the demise of his wife in such a way was truly sad. Some offered their condolences as they walked past.
Some security men assisted Dayo and Segun in moving their luggage to the lounge.
Dayo sat on the chair, too sad to utter a word while Segun communicated with Laura’s sister at the hospital.
According to Laura’s sister, Laura had some complications that unfortunately led to her death but miraculously the baby was saved.
Upon hearing the news, Segun joined Dayo on the sofa, speechless and sad too, each not knowing where to go from there.
Dayo and Segun before the sad incident were in Lagos attending a stakeholders’ meeting when Dayo was informed that Laura was in labour. Dayo had to leave the meeting immediately and booked the earliest flight back to Abuja. Just when they were about to board the flight, they were sadly informed of the death of Laura.
Dayo stared into empty space, oblivious of what was happening around him. All he could think of was how he was going to continue living without the love of his life.
Closing his eyes, fresh sets of tears rolled down, and the lump in his throat tightened.
“My life is about to change, “ Dayo said to no one in particular.

Hello @jesuslnrs thank you so much for this beautiful compliment, it means a lot to me😊
Wow! This is beautifully written.
My heart cries for Dayo. The loss is heartbreaking but I hope he stays strong for the baby.
It's one of the worst messages that one could get anytime any day. One thing is certain, as it pains us when we lose a loved one, so it dose our maker. May God comfort the family.
