Adapting to Modern: Getting to Know Your Rebellion Core Set Part 1

Prelude
Welcome back to another new post on Adapting to Modern where I look at how I crossed over from playing in Wild Battles till today focusing and getting more cards on Modern Battles, sharing with the community the struggles, the strategies and things I do to move towards playing in Modern. What a journey we had doing reviews and introduction of Soul Bound reward cards week after week and on last week, we finally managed to complete the whole series of the whole Rebellion Soul Bound reward card set. But the modern gameplay is not just limited to that of the Soul Bound reward cards as they are cards that boost up the game play. There is still a need to have a good base of Rebellion core set cards. So with this, I will embark on reviewing 2 cards per week from the Rebellion Core set to discuss if you should be considering getting some of the cards to adapt to modern gameplay when the new set comes and Chaos Legion phases out.

Rebellion Core Set Cards

Today, we will begin discussing card from Rebellion Core Set. Similar to how I reviewed the Soul Bound reward cards, I will be discussing about the growth of the cards and will give a simple review to whether or not investing into them will level up your game play or not. And let's start off with the first two cards in Rebellion Fire Splinter.

Gobalano Solider

The first card that we will be looking at today will be Gobalano Solider. One of the Rebellion cards that I use more often. This card carries the Rebellion introduced ability, Ambush. This ability gives a great head start for your lineup as Ambush smashes right before the match start. If it was striking a backline card that is of low health, there is even a chance to kill it before the match even start proper when its attack is boosted. The pity of this card is that unless having an attack boost, while we do have ambush, 1 attack has a high chance of probably just scratch most opponent cards. However, things do get a little interesting when this card reaches level 5 as it gains a shatter ability. Shatter do give additional value especially when you are able to pre "crack" your opponent's backline card's armour, exposing opponent last card to additional attacks from your other sneak attack cards that aim the backline. To gain even more value for this card, one should try to bring this card's level as high as possible with attack peaking at 3 at max level. This is a low mana value card so I would say, if possible, building up this card could prove to be a great investment.

Nimbledook Scout

The next card that we look at will be Nimbledook Scout. With Weapons training very much becoming a very key part of the game, fielding this card likely will include a weapons training card to give this card bigger value to strike opponent. The strength to this card is its high speed and the backfire that returns damage upon opponent missing their attack on her. I also like it that she gives Inspire at level 5 which is actually very good for typical heavy melee lineup on fire splinter. Interestingly this card gains blast at its last level which make me think if blast can be triggered via backfire or not. If unable to, then maybe can just keep to level 9 with maximum speed to capitalize on the backfire. At 2 mana, this is also amazing because it is easy to plant into lineup especially for low mana matches.

Assessment
To be honest, I like what I see from this 2 cards and for both being common cards, they are very good value. My personal take is that if it is possible, this 2 are cards that are worthy to be built up. And being common cards, cost wise should be more manageable. Both are strong utility cards that can allow them to feature often and not forgetting little league where both of them should thrive.

Rating wise for both the cards, I would say Gobalano Soldier deserves a little better at maybe 3.8/5 and Nimbledook Scout at 3.6/5. Reason for the difference is that Nimbledook Scout will need an additional weapons trainer to make her get more value as compared to Gobalano Soldier can start by itself.

Wrap Up
As mentioned in my previous post, I have started looking into the Rebellion core set cards that we need to start building up to prepare for the new set that will be coming in when Chaos Legion gets rotated out. It will likely bring about loads of activities on the Rebellion card market movement as compared to previous when everyone had a big excess of Chaos Legion cards and market activity was a little low. I hope you will find this useful as I continue to look at the core cards and assess them for possible growth needs to be ready for future modern gameplay.
