Splinterlands Avatar Freebies?

Just today I logged onto Splinterlands and was surprised to receive an avatar gift to obtain a head gear of my choice for free after playing and winning five battles. I assume there were more rewards to come for increasing plays.

Currently outfits and hats are not available for purchase so I am assuming the awards we can potentially get for partaking in daily ranked battles is limited? I have yet to find actual news from official Splinterlands on this and have not partake in Town Halls for quite some time, but either way awesome to see as it motivates me and likely others to stay active in game.
