Splinterlands: We Found Out What "Conclave Arcana" Will Be

A couple of days ago Matt launched some speculation regarding the work started on Conclave Arcana and Hardcore mode.

We don't know yet what the hardcore mode will be, but we found out what Conclave Arcana stands for. That is the name of the next core set of Splinterlands, after Rebellion.

I hoped it would be a new game mode, but we need to be realistic, this wasn't going to happen any time soon, to have not one but two new game modes for Splinterlands when there are still big unfinished things they work on.

We know about the new core set from their SPS proposal to fund its "development, release and operation costs".

I'd like to point out a few differences proposed compared to the current set, Rebellion.

Multiple Types of Packs

Until Rebellion, including it, there was only one type of pack for the core set: the booster pack.

Starting from Conclave Arcana, there will be 3 additional pack types sold:

  • legendary packs
  • alchemy packs
  • starter packs

The legendary pack includes a guaranteed legendary card instead of a guaranteed rare card as the booster pack does, at a 6x the cost in DEC or credits (24k instead of 4k).

Will it be worth it? At these prices for legendary cards on the 3rd party markets, no. They seem more like bull market prices, and hopefully, we'll get there and this pack will be an interesting buy too.

The alchemy pack includes a guaranteed GF card at a 3x the cost of a booster pack. This seems suitable for gamblers, and maybe (I haven't done the math) for those who want a GF set. Seems like a good way to improve chances to pull GFLs since one card is guaranteed to be GF. But if the GF card is a common or a rare, the 3x cost will be too steep.

I really like the starter packs for the new players. One pack includes 25 cards, common or rare (chances: 80% common, 20% rare), no GF, and will cost 5k DEC or credits. Will also come by default with a new spellbook (purchased by Splinterlands for the new user from the DAO).

The starter pack will be SB, but its cards will be tradable, since they are normal core set cards.

The Starter pack will be unlimited and will be available to be purchased until the next core set is released, which is perfect for newcomers.

I didn't figure out if one could buy more of them. Maybe in that case a combination of starter packs + legendary packs would build a deck cheaper from the primary market? Of course, usually the deck is cheaper to build from the 3rd party markets afterwards, in most cases, but just taking a look at some combinations.

SPS DAO Benefits

600k DEC paid now (if/when the proposal passes) is not cheap, thinking about all the recent expenses. So, what's in it for the DAO?

The usual 50% of the pack sales go to the DAO, but that will start from April 2025 or so, when the new core set is expected to be released (not sure if that's when the presale starts or that will be one month earlier).

Other than that, the SPS DAO receives 10% of the quota of daily sales not realized in the general sale, with the remaining 90% being burned daily.

Splinterlands will buy at least some of the Starter Packs from the DAO to offer new players who purchase the spellbook, so that's another revenue to be added.

Conflicts

There are some small planned changes to the conflicts too:

  • Rebellion cards and packs which are not SB can be staked for Conclave Arcana conflicts
  • Rebellion Mage Wagons can be upgraded for Conclave Arcana conflicts
  • There will be repair fees after each conflict
  • More tokens might be used for payment (land resources)

Other Updates

Chaos Legion and associated sets will drop out of Modern when Conclave Arcana will be released.

There will be no Rebellion mini set at the end of this year if the proposal passes.

Conclusion

These are only my first remarks on the proposed new set. What is ok is there will be different options for different strategies and that the Starter Packs will be very useful for new players.

The prices... We will see. If the bull market doesn't reach Splinterlands by the time the new set is released (respectively, the presale), it is probably kind of steep to participate.

It's getting more complicated rather than simpler by the day. So it's conclave arcana after Rebellion? I hope it'll be worth it, because there are not that needs fixing rather than newer additions.

Yes, apart from the promo cards, it seems to be the next thing. Certainly the next core set. They will always sell these core sets, unless they find other ways to monetize the game that replaces that revenue, which won't be easy, because we talk about millions of dollars.

On the complexity versus simplicity debate, they want to make the game more complicated, it's the kind of games they and enough of the core player base like. That's one of the reason why Land was introduced, drawing inspiration from Civilization, a quite complex resource management game series, that was very popular.

I think it's the right call to skip the mini set this time - we need to get Chaos Legion out of Modern ASAP.

The mini set would only delay the core set and new players coming in would probably be served better if a new core set comes in sooner.

About CL, it's fine by me, and it makes sense to not want it in Modern anymore, although it would be interesting to see how Modern and Wild will look after that.

It certainly seems good timing for the bull market, although I still think their pricing is totally out of whack with the market.. time will tell.

I'm not sure about the pricing. We can only judge that closer to the release date and the state of the market both for crypto in general, and for Splinterlands. Those multipliers for the legendary chests and alchemy chests... remain to be seen if the price difference will be worth the guaranteed legendary or GF.
