Hola querido hiver.

Hi, dear hiver.
I have already told you about my visits to Peñíscola Castle and its Parque de Artillería. Today I show you the route that tourists must follow to reach these places.
The normal access is from the port area, as this is where it is easiest to find a parking space. On the days I visited Peñíscola we were lucky that the parking was free, but if you go in high season you have to pay. Instinct takes you to this square, where you are greeted by the town's coat of arms next to an anchor that represents its seafaring history.
To the right we are accompanied by the Renaissance wall, very well preserved. The only striking feature in this part is a fountain over which engraved slabs confirm that this part of the fortification was built during the reign of Philip II.
Up to this point, everything was flat. From these stairs the adventure begins and the walk uphill. Get those legs ready!
Once we climbed the last step we came across the steep ramp you see on the cover. In this photo we have already covered the first half of it.
Our effort has been rewarded. We have risen high enough to see the sea and its horizon on the south side. The guard post you see on the left was perfectly placed to spot possible attackers on that side.
This is the Fosc Gateway, whose curved entrance used to favour its defence and now complicates manoeuvring. Be careful because vehicles occasionally emerge from here. Road access is limited to residents and business goods.
A detail of the gate, which still has the metal sheet that protects it.
In Peñíscola all roads lead to the castle, haha, it's impossible to get lost!
Now we can say that we have arrived at the entrance to the town. We find ourselves in a small esplanade where the old schools are. It is not very interesting, they were only empty and closed with bars. But the views from there announce that we will have a good time if we continue exploring upwards.
The coastline in its northern part...
... as far as the eye can see and the profile of the coastline.
Going up the steep street we arrive at a square that houses various businesses aimed at tourism, like practically everything that remains within the walls. Here the Church of the Ermitana stands out, a small temple that can be visited although it does not have much of interest inside. If you visit my post on the Castle you can see the bell tower and roof from above.
One of the streets leading to or from the square. The whitewashed houses with small balconies adorned with plants are very similar and typical of the Mediterranean coast.
Here instead of a slope we find stairs. What do you prefer?
Crossing the square we find ourselves under the watchful eye of the statue of Benedict XIII, Pope Luna, who gives us his blessing. It is the sign that we have arrived at our destination, the gates of his castle.
Although the scaffolding in the background did not help to make the photos look nice, I like this portrait very much. That of a man who died in seclusion and with the feeling of having been betrayed by those he trusted. Clinging to a papal throne that was worthless.
Until the next post. In the meantime, take care!

It is a beautiful town, the most visited in the area thanks to its castle and beaches. The statue is very realistic, it looks like it will get up from the seat at any time. 🤣

Hello lady @palomap3
What a beautiful city, the buildings are beautiful, I love the cobblestone streets and the beautiful floral gardens
What beautiful photographs, the landscape and the view of the sea is beautiful.
I’m glad you liked it, beautiful lady. ☺️ The town is very beautiful, yes. It’s an historic place and you can do lots of things there.
These are well taken and sure looks smooth. I like the guard post one.
I bet it'll be a great life saver for when attackers gets in the city. Looks like those are some of the things modern buildings don't have these days.
Now no guards are needed, but centuries ago in this area there were many conflicts. Pirates included! Now wars are done in a different way and walls like this are not of much use. Thank you for your visit and for commenting. 🤗
I agree with you. Wars are fought differently these days.
