DIY nesting boxes for chickens/ DIY Legekästen für Hühner

Hello everyone on this lovely morning. Things are slowly getting into full swing, and the next stage of the chickens’ cosy haven is gradually taking shape. As I’m using whatever materials I have to hand, I’ve started building the nesting boxes.

For this, I used some wooden slats I had left over. As a DIY enthusiast, you’ve got plenty of screws and nails anyway. A base that’s easy to keep clean was also essential – a piece of roofing membrane was perfect for this. It’s wipeable, waterproof and made of plastic, but is also lined with straw or wood shavings to make it cosy for the chickens.

All in all, the project only cost me time, and I’m very happy with the result. I just need to attach a panel at the bottom to stop the hens from kicking the straw out, so they feel a bit more sheltered and the eggs actually stay in the box.
A raised platform made of beams forms the base of the nesting boxes. In this case, there are three compartments, as the hatch on the other side of the garden shed wasn’t any bigger. From there, you can later collect the eggs without disturbing the hens.

Originally, I’d built a larger box with four compartments, but it wouldn’t fit through the hatch. What’s more, I didn’t realise at the time that nesting boxes should be 30–60 cm high so that the hens feel safe whilst laying. You never stop learning – it’s a good thing I was able to sort it all out in time.
One compartment is usually used by two hens and should be about 30 cm wide and at least 40 cm high. I stuck to the height exactly, and each compartment ended up being 35 cm wide.

I’m hoping it’s dark enough for the hens now. If not, I’ll cover the sides with some leftover pieces and close up the front at the top a bit as well. But I won’t be able to tell for sure until the hens have moved in and started laying eggs. You can usually tell quite quickly if an animal isn’t comfortable or only prefers the darkest corner. So: keep calm and wait and see.

Hallo zusammen an diesem wundervollen Morgen. So langsam nimmt alles Fahrt auf und der nächste Schritt für die Hühner Wohlfühloase wird nach und nach umgesetzt. Da ich verwende, was mir zur Verfügung steht, habe ich angefangen, die Legekästen zu bauen.
Dafür habe ich Holzleisten benutzt, von denen ich noch einige übrig hatte. Schrauben und Nägel hat man als Werkler ja sowieso genug. Auch eine gut sauber zu haltende Unterlage durfte nicht fehlen – hier bot sich ein Stück Dachfolie perfekt an. Sie ist abwischbar, wasserdicht und besteht aus Kunststoff, wird aber zusätzlich mit Stroh oder Holzspänen ausgelegt, damit die Hühner es gemütlich haben.

Alles in allem hat mich das Projekt nur Zeit gekostet, und ich bin mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden. Lediglich eine Blende unten muss ich noch befestigen, damit kein Huhn das Stroh herauswerfen kann, sie sich etwas geschützter fühlen und die Eier auch wirklich im Kasten bleiben.
Eine Erhöhung aus Balken bildet die Füße der Legekästen. Es sind in diesem Fall drei Kammern geworden, denn größer war die Luke zur anderen Gartenhüttenseite nicht. Von dort aus kann man später die Eier entnehmen, ohne die Hühner zu stören.

Ursprünglich hatte ich einen größeren Kasten mit vier Kammern gebaut, aber der passte nicht durch die Luke. Außerdem wusste ich zu dem Zeitpunkt noch nicht, dass Legekästen 30–60 cm hoch sein sollten, damit die Hühner sich beim Legen sicher fühlen. Man lernt eben nie aus – gut, dass ich alles noch rechtzeitig korrigieren konnte.
Eine Kammer wird in der Regel von zwei Hühnern genutzt und sollte etwa 30 cm breit und mindestens 40 cm hoch sein. Die Höhe habe ich genau eingehalten, und jede Kammer ist 35 cm breit geworden.

Ich hoffe nun, dass es für die Hühner dunkel genug ist. Falls nicht, werde ich die Seiten noch mit Reststücken verblenden und oben vorne ebenfalls etwas schließen. Das kann man aber erst beurteilen, wenn die Hühner eingezogen sind und mit dem Eierlegen beginnen. Man merkt ja schnell, wenn sich ein Tier nicht wohlfühlt oder nur die dunkelste Kammer bevorzugt. Also: Ruhe bewahren und abwarten.
