Today, I want to share a simple but meaningful experience that my son and I had during Teacher’s Day. Sometimes, we do not need expensive gifts or complete materials to make someone feel special. Even a small handmade gift can bring happiness to someone, especially when it comes from the heart.

On October 5, we celebrated Teacher’s Day. The children did not have classes that day, but their classes continued on October 6. Because of this, my son had the opportunity to give his teacher an inspiring card with a special message that we made together at home. It was a simple DIY project, but it became a memorable experience for both of us.

I wanted my son to understand that teachers deserve appreciation for their hard work, patience, dedication, and love for their students. That is why I decided to help him make a handmade card instead of buying one from a store.

The Materials We Used for Our DIY Card

We did not have complete art materials at home, but we tried our best to create something beautiful using the things available to us.

Here are the materials we used:

One piece of columnar book paper

A ₱20 coin for tracing the smiley faces

A green Stabilo marker

A pen for writing the message

Our creativity, patience, and love

As a mother, I believe that children do not always need expensive materials to express their feelings. What matters most is allowing them to participate, use their imagination, and understand the meaning behind what they are making.

How We Made Our Handmade Teacher’s Day Card

First, I prepared one sheet of columnar book paper. I folded it in half lengthwise and made sure the edges were aligned properly. This became the foundation of our handmade card.

Second, I made diagonal folds on both sides of the paper to create the shape we wanted. I carefully folded the upper and lower sections so that they looked like the roof of a small house, with triangle-like shapes on both ends. After that, I divided the paper in the middle to create the sections needed for our card design.

Although the process might sound a little complicated, I enjoyed figuring out how to turn an ordinary sheet of paper into something special. We did not have fancy cardstock, colorful stickers, or decorative materials, but we made the most of what we had.

Next, I used a ₱20 coin to trace four circles on the back section of the paper. These circles became our smiley-face designs. My son helped with the creative part, and we used a green Stabilo marker to make the smiley faces more noticeable and attractive.

I wanted the card to look cheerful because it was intended for his teacher. The little smiley faces added a playful touch that made the card more appealing. Even though our design was simple, I felt happy seeing how it slowly came together.

When we finished decorating the card, it was time for my son to write his special message.

He wrote:

“HAPPY TEACHER'S DAY, MAAM IMEE! YOU ARE THE BEST!”

Seeing him write those words made me smile. It was such a simple message, but it carried a sincere expression of appreciation for his teacher. As a mother, I felt proud because he was learning how to recognize the people who help him grow, learn, and develop new skills.

After he finished writing, I made another fold in the paper and created a small pull section. We added the word “PULL” to show his teacher where to pull the paper. When she pulled it, she would be able to reveal the special message hidden inside the card.

That little surprise made our DIY project even more exciting! We wanted the card to be more than just a piece of folded paper. We wanted it to become a small gift that would bring a smile to Teacher Imee's face.

Finally, our handmade Teacher's Day card was ready. We were excited for my son to bring it to school the following day and give it to his teacher.

As a Mother and an Online Teacher

While making this card with my son, I also reflected on my own experience as a teacher.

I am an online English teacher who teaches children from different countries and backgrounds. Because I work online, I do not always get the chance to meet my students personally. Sometimes, I only see them through a screen, but that does not mean the care and dedication I give to teaching are any less meaningful.

Teaching requires patience, understanding, and commitment. Every child has a different personality, learning style, and level of confidence. Some students learn quickly, while others need more guidance and encouragement. As teachers, we need to adjust our teaching methods and create a comfortable learning environment where children feel safe to participate and express themselves.

There are also days when teaching can be tiring and challenging. We prepare lessons, explain difficult words, correct mistakes, encourage shy students, and celebrate even the smallest improvements. Sometimes, a simple thank-you from a student or a happy smile during class is enough to remind us why we love what we do.

This is why Teacher's Day is meaningful to me, not only as a mother but also as a fellow teacher. It reminds me that behind every lesson is a teacher who wants to help children learn something valuable.

I may not be able to see all my students in person, but I believe that the dedication and love we give to teaching can still reach them. Whether we teach inside a traditional classroom or through an online platform, our purpose remains important: to guide children, help them discover their abilities, and teach them lessons they can carry throughout their lives.

Small Gestures Can Bring Great Happiness

When October 6 arrived, my son was ready to give his handmade card to Teacher Imee. I felt happy knowing that he had something personal to share with her. We did not spend much money, and we did not use expensive materials, but we spent time creating something together.

For me, that is what makes this experience special.

As parents, we can teach our children many valuable lessons through simple activities at home. By helping my son make this card, I was teaching him creativity, appreciation, kindness, and gratitude. I wanted him to understand that showing love does not always require money. Sometimes, giving a little of our time and effort is already enough to make another person happy.

Teachers work hard to educate and guide their students. They deserve respect and appreciation, not only during Teacher's Day but throughout the year. A handmade card, a sincere message, a simple thank-you, or a small gesture of kindness can remind them that their efforts matter.

I know that we cannot fully repay our teachers for all their sacrifices, but we can show them that we recognize and appreciate what they do for us and our children.

This experience also reminded me that meaningful memories do not always come from expensive celebrations or grand surprises. Sometimes, they come from sitting together at home, folding a piece of paper, drawing smiley faces with a coin as a guide, and watching a child write a heartfelt message for someone important in his life.

I am grateful that I had the chance to share this little project with my son. It was a simple activity, but it brought us closer and gave us an opportunity to create something meaningful together.

To all the teachers in our community, thank you for your patience, dedication, and sacrifices. Your work makes a difference in the lives of children, even when you do not immediately see the results.

And to my fellow parents, let us continue teaching our children to appreciate the people who guide and support them. We do not need to spend a lot to make someone feel valued.

Sometimes, all it takes is a piece of bond paper, a few smiley faces, and a message written with love.

Happy Teacher's Day to all the wonderful teachers! May you always find joy and fulfillment in the important work that you do.

Thank you for reading my story, Hive community! I hope this simple DIY project inspires you to create something meaningful with your children, too.

Until my next blog, stay happy, creative, and grateful!
