Bringing my fantasy to reality 😍making a shift shirt dress

Hello beautiful needleworkers and creatives, hope you are all busy creating wonders and also well wherever you are. I'm happy to be a part of this community, its always exciting to get raw materials and let our hands and brain do justice to them, making out fantasies come to life by turning the raw materials into something great, there is always joy and satisfaction it derived from being creative, it's kind of therapeutic for me too.

Today, I will like to share with us how made this simple yet classy-looking shift dress. It was hard for me at first to decide what to make with this fabric, I've had this African print fabric for a while but have always had it in mind to combine It with some other fabric instead of using it alone because it seems very bright to the eyes, flashy colors are very distracting for me, I wanted something to tone it down a bit, so I finally decided to go with a plain black crepe material, and it came out as nice as I expected it to.

I wanted a shirt dress, but not a buttoned-down type, so I instead went for a placket with a bishop collar, it will give me the shirt-like look, only that It will only have a button around the placket area.

Here you can see me drafting my basic body pattern, using the African print as the back side then combining it with the plain crepe fabric at the front. This is called a shift dress because it is not made to be skin fitted tight, but instead a bit free on our body, by leaving an inch-free allowance added to the sewing allowance.

For the sleeves, the shirt like a long sleeve is my choice, here I drafted the patterns, which comprised of a basic sleeve and its cuff, still switching the colors, one side, plain crepe around the African print side, and the African print the other way round. I think it gives the bold aura by switching the colors up, I don't have to wear a regular plain shirt gown or just the African print fabric alone, I can now wear this dress to a formal event, thanks to the plain crepe combination.

Making this dress was fun and easy for me, the great thing about making your dress is that it gives you the power to be as creative as you like, into making your ideas come to life, it is kind of magical, don't you think so?
