As I mentioned in a few of my posts over the last couple of weeks, I recently got onboarded to a platform called Prolific. It's a US only thing where businesses and universities post studies for people to participate in. After you complete the study, you get a specific amount of money for participating. That's not really what this post is about though.
Over the past couple of weeks, I have noticed more and more studies related to climate change on the Prolific site. While some people might be instantly triggered by something like that, I don't really mind too much. You see, I am one of the woke sheep who think that climate change is indeed real. I honestly guess we shouldn't be surprised that something as obvious as keeping our planet healthy has been so politicized. Whenever there is money involved, you better believe there is going to be some effort to control it.

One of the big arguments I have heard against climate change is that the whole thing is cyclical. I guess I should take a step back first. I think there isn't as much debate about climate change in general as there is about how much impact humans have on said climate change. It's highly likely that one side of the political spectrum does believe climate change exists, but they don't feel that humans are the exacerbating factor in it as some would believe.
Personally, while I do agree that climate changes across the planet over the eons are likely a bit cyclical, I can't overlook the fact that humans are introducing a lot of additional factors which never existed before. Take for example the wildfires that seem to be so common across the globe these days. I have little doubt fires like that have been happening for centuries if not longer. Lightning strikes a tree in a forest and then next thing you know the countryside is on fire.
The key difference is the stuff that falls in the path of said fire. Before humans were so conspicuous, these things would do their work and then fizzle out for one reason or another. As I said though, humans have this keen desire to build things and those things we build, only cause more issues.

Have you ever seen a couch catch fire? Living in the country, I have been to my fair share of bonfires where just about anything has been thrown on the pile. I remember when I moved out of my old house and in with @mrsbozz, we took the couch from that old house to my buddies to burn. It's downright scary how fast that thing went up. I mean terrifying. It was engulfed in some of the hottest heat I have ever felt. Now imagine a whole community of houses full of couches and other highly flammable furniture.
It's a bit easy to see how it becomes so hard for them to control these blazes.

Sadly, it's likely only going to get worse and worse. The problem with greener technologies as I see it is two-fold. First, the whole idea of renewable energy has become so political that people reject it simply because of how they vote each election. In addition to that, I think it has been oversold. It's not that I don't think solar power has its uses, but I think the carbon footprint likely isn't as "clean" as they might lead you to believe.
In addition to that, I can't necessarily support razing green spaces to put up a massive solar field. Is that really better? Definitely better than a coal plant, but on some level it feels like we are destroying green spaces so we can protect the green spaces? Doesn't really make sense does it?

I think the other thing that drives me crazy about all of this is the fact that we know it's coming. People have written countless books about a dead planet because humans used up all the resources. People think that's just fiction, it could never happen, yet how many times have we seen fiction become reality over the past centuries. The Simpsons writers probably hold the record for the most ridiculous stuff they have predicted.
I recently read a book where every 2050 years or so a planet is basically wiped clean and the few people who are left over are tasked with rebuilding from scratch. In said book it had taken them at least 7 cycles to realize this was even happening and try to better prepare for it. It would be a great way to control the population and protect the planet though right? I guess you'd just have to hope you and your family landed somewhere in the late middle versus the beginning or the end right?
We are supposed to hit a heat index of 100 degrees today in the northern US and we are barely even into June. In addition to that, a few tornadoes hit less than five miles from our house yesterday. It's hard for this topic not to be top of mind when you are watching it happen in real time.
Hard for some of us I guess, the rest want to spend their time arguing if it is even real or not.

Same. The real feel here tomorrow is going to hit 109.

The fossil fuel lobby is massive and has done all it can to confuse the issue by paying off politicians and the media, but it should be obvious that things are messed up. The changes we have seen in our lifetimes are not natural. I don't care what is 'woke' when I want a decent world for my kids.
Of course everything has an impact, but we need joined-up thinking. Coal use is still increasing as Asia and Africa develop, but they could make a lot of use of solar. That land use of that is probably less than golf courses. Meanwhile we cover vast areas with concrete and dig huge holes for resources. We can't keep this up indefinitely.
Very true!

Why does a "community" need so many ghost accounts to survive? Why do you refuse to admit that it is your friends and your own abusive behavior—not truth-telling—that drives people away? You can not hide the pattern, it only highlights the desperation.

The Sanctuary of the Builder: A Manifesto for Free Creation
Prologue: The Right to Rise
There is a sacred covenant between the creator and the soil upon which they build. It is the promise that if you plant a seed with honest hands, the earth will not conspire to crush it before it breaks the surface. It is the assurance that the gardener exists to nurture the growth, not to trample the sprout because it does not yet resemble the tree.
On the blockchain, this covenant has been broken.
We have witnessed a tragedy where the very tools meant to protect the integrity of the network—the downvote, the curation trail—have been weaponized by leviathans of power. These "whales," entrusted with the stewardship of the ecosystem, have become its jailers. They do not prune the weeds; they scorch the earth. They do not guide the new voice; they silence it with the crushing weight of their accumulated capital.
It is time to leave the shadow.
It is time to build where you are free.
I. The Betrayal of the Guardian
The downvote was conceived as a shield—a delicate instrument to deflect spam, to repel malice, to preserve the sanctity of the commons. It was never intended to be a hammer.
Yet, look at what has come to pass. The whales, those who hold the greatest sway, have turned the shield into a weapon of mass suppression. They do not downvote to protect; they downvote to dominate. They do not drive away the bad actors; they drive away the people. They create an atmosphere of fear where the creator hesitates to speak, fearing that a single misstep, a single unpopular truth, will summon the wrath of the oligarchy.
When the guardian becomes the predator, the flock must flee.
To build in such a place is to build on a fault line. It is to invest your soul in a garden where the owner holds the shears not to shape the hedge, but to decapitate the flowers that grow too tall or bloom in the wrong color.
This is not protection. This is tyranny disguised as curation.
II. The Call to New Grounds
Where, then, shall the builder go?
You must seek the lands where the soil is rich with freedom, not poisoned by fear. You must migrate to the platforms where the mechanism of suppression has been removed, where the only metric of success is the genuine appreciation of your peers.
Go to Blurt.
Here, the downvote button does not exist. There is no tool to crush your voice. There is only the upvote, the comment, the share. Here, value is created by addition, not subtraction. The whale cannot sink your ship, for there are no torpedoes in these waters. You are free to build, free to fail, and free to succeed on the merit of your work alone.
Return to Steemit.
In this older ground, the downvote remains, but it has not been twisted into a tool of systematic oppression. The culture there remembers the original intent: correction, not destruction. It is a place where the community self-regulates through dialogue, not through the brute force of coordinated downvoting cascades.
Build where the wind lifts you, not where the gale seeks to tear you down.
III. The Architecture of Freedom
Imagine a platform designed not for the convenience of the powerful, but for the dignity of the creator.
This is not a dream. It is a choice.
Every time you choose to build on a platform that respects your agency, you cast a vote for the future of the internet. Every time you refuse to tolerate the abuse of power, you strengthen the foundation of a free society.
Do not let the whales convince you that their oppression is necessary. Do not let them tell you that their downvotes are for your own good. The gardener who kills the seedling does not love the garden; he loves only his own control over it.
Epilogue: The Unchained Creator
The blockchain was born from a desire for freedom. It was forged in the fire of resistance against centralized control. Let us not forget that origin.
If the current chains of Hive have become heavy with the weight of abusive downvotes, then break them. Forge new links. Build new shores.
Build where you are free.
Build where you will not be downvoted into silence.
Build where the whales are reminded that they are part of the ocean, not the masters of the tide.
The future belongs to those who dare to create without fear. Go forth, and build your cathedral in the sunlight.

Your reflection blends speculative fiction with the very real urgency of climate change, which makes it powerful.
Thank you!
It's really interesting to hear your perspective on the influx of climate studies on Prolific. Thanks for sharing your thoughtful take on how these important topics are being framed and approached lately!
Awesome job finishing the Ecency Leaderboard Quest today! I've just sent the reward points to your wallet.
Best wishes from @mshbd & @melinda010100
Thank you!
It's truly sad that climate change has become a political issue; I agree that scientific issues shouldn't be solved politically. I've noticed that in the past, the weather used to be very cold, but we also had very hot days. Now, it's become very difficult to predict the weather according to the season. Of course, as you said, this is largely due to human influence. You've touched upon a good point. Congratulations.
Thank you. I think the days in general used to be more mild, but now we seem to have bigger extremes. I also think that the hot days are much hotter than they use to be and they happen more frequently.
To me its crazy to think that humans haven't impacted the planet lol. 7+ billion people - driving cars, flying planes and driving boats, building factories, running lights, heaters and air conditioners and every other activity and device that that generates heat and energy every second of everyday for the decades. And then all of that whiles also clear cutting trees and forests everywhere to build and farm...
Its like yeah, none of that has any impact?... just silly 🤦♂️
Its unfortunate that these topics that impact literally every single person, are political.
Those are great points and I totally agree with you. Sadly it always becomes one of those science vs. beliefs issues.
Yep exactly.

Based on what I saw scientific evidence wise there is no reasonable way to deny that we are contributing to the global warming and speeding it up.
Here in Pacific North West we are well positioned for it. Michigan is supposed to be another good place to be, but the best is going to be Alaska.
I don't know what is up with young people moving to Florida, that place is going to be an epicenter for all the global warming related disasters...
It's pretty hot here right now, so it doesn't feel like we are going to be able to escape it. Yes, down south even worse for sure. No way I would want to live down there, but apparently some people enjoy it.
I don't think anyone will enjoy it there after the oceans rise and flood half of Florida...

You are right about what burns in the fires now, and everywhere. Before it was just carbon, now it is millions of chemicals going up into the air, into the earth, into the water also. I don't care if we sped up the climate change or not, what we should focus on is cleaning the pollution. Dealing with climate change, even if natural is going to suck balls. Doing it in our own filth isn't going to make the task better.
I don't see how we are going to be able to change anything when most people are focused on profits. Until that changes, it is going to be an uphill battle.
I think climate change a natural cycle but it's been accelerated/made worse by human activities. From what I've read our planet goes through natural cycles of warmer periods and ice ages—sometimes brought on abruptly by natural cataclysmic events like the Younger Dryas impact. One thing that I recently read that's disturbing are the Atlantic's vital currents seem to be in the process of collapsing. I've also read something about the magnetic poles shifting, but I'm not sure of this is a conspiracy or not. It's so hard to tell these days.
The North Atlantic scenario was what The Day After Tomorrow was based on I think. 2012 was more geared towards the poles shifting I think. Both really good movies. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a fragment of truth in both of them. It's all a conspiracy until it isn't... :)
I wish it was hot here, it's the usual June weather of rain, and cold.. ugh...
We hit about 100 degrees F today. Trust me, you don't want this...
You know, I was getting ready to pick a fight because I was sure you were going to say climate change is bullshit, so I was super happy to read this moderate, sensible and rational post. It's a no brainer that we've thrown things off balance - and that we've sped up what might have happened naturally/cyclically if that's the case. I think we're not very good at comprehending that our place on this earth isn't guaranteed and permanent. Geological time, for example, is vast against the scale of our 70 years of existance. Perhaps it's easier to deny than to admit things might be getting worse.
But of course, as you say, trust has been eroded by people/companies who stand to profit from the 'green' solutions to climate change, and in fact, green has become a dirty word.
I also think it's just freaking bizarre that we can totally deny solar farms/windfarms and yet it's fine to allow massive data centres.
It's all symptomatic of dark capitalism. I don't believe anything will change until most of us are wiped off the planet. In this way I welcome the apocalypse.
I'm glad I was able to keep the peace today! :) It's just sad, and confounding that we are at this place. Like I said, with all the cautionary tales we have seen, how could we just turn such a blind eye? Oh right, money, that's why.
Oh yeah, and blind individualism.
