It’s pitch black outside but I’m in a reverent mood and stumped for words. I stare at the night sky, it’s sombre and starless. Then I think, what better moment than to schmooze with God, hoping he actually gets impressed and sends me a relieving sign.
Precisely two weeks ago, I had this ominous dream which I couldn’t really place meaning on. I brushed it off and went about my day. A few days later I was forced to concede to the possibility of the supernatural as the ominous dream wasn’t just a nightmare triggered by stress but a sign of a great tragedy.
Flashbacks.
The imagery sends a sudden feverish ache across my body. It feels like acid under my skin and gives me a cold spreading numbness. The only warmth I feel is that of tears on my cheeks. The ephemeral feeling of the days we spent together until we couldn't as we both took jobs.

I took this picture of this painting.
I’m seething. Then comes the susurration of the wind. When I eventually find my voice, I tilt my head toward the heavens, my voice shaky, I mutter “Death is off-putting, you know. Millions of adroit souls are departing this world with beautiful dreams and creativity the world would have loved to see.”
You know Blue, right? He really didn’t have to leave the way he did. He had the most dulcet personality and I wanted for a miracle to occur whereby one day, he’d wake up energized and not have to need drugs for survival. I have never met a more ingenious person. Judiciously enough, he was plausible, his speeches were always lucid, very intriguing, permit me to say he was impeccable. Although man is said to be with flaws, Blue was flawless. Cordial, yet cynical as a few people here and there took his empathy for granted. What a loss of an erudite man.
Why did something so bitter and cold have to attack us when we least expect it? Why did it have to be Blue? It’s a cinch for you to fill up the sky with stars in reverence of Blue you know.
A reverent pause. Eyes shut. Hands clasped together. Slow breathing.
Eventually, I peel my eyes open, and glance at the sky. I assume he’s sold as the sky has become sparsely populated with stars.
I’m gobsmacked! So I picked up the candle and match box I had come outside with considering I had no biodegradable lantern to send into the sky. I lit the candle and raised it up.
To Blue, I say breathlessly and a star twinkles. Then, the wind howls, blowing out the flame. Not enough closure but close enough to make my heart stop beating erratically.
